'small in a big cup' rant times 2(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by silenceRose20
Hi friends, 255**** partner here, approaching the two yr mark next month (!!) and I'm sure this happens at many locations not just ours. The ordering of a 'short....tall....or grande....in a venti/trenta cup'.....uaarrrgh
(lengthy post below, you've been warned lol)
Now hear me out: I completely get it when you want the FULL amount of coffee or drink but want the EMPTY ROOM to add your own whatever to it also or just the protection of that EMPTY room to not spill it on you or your car/desk/etc. Cool, gotcha, Of course, no problem! My issue begins when they order it that way and still want the cup FULL to that larger size. Two repeat regulars for example: 1) the lesser of the two IMO - "grande caramel crunch frap in a venti cup with extra caramel drizzle, extra crunch and extra whip" meaning they want almost a solid INCH of caramel drizzle at the bottom of the cup AND the whip to be another inch above that....then the drink....then another heap of whip and flood of caramel 🤢🤢🤢😱😱😱 The cherry on top is that she will only order after confirming someone is at the store who "knows how to correctly make the drink for 'Brittney' ***not actual name of course**" and exactly which person is there by name to make it for her (only three of us she knows by name is allowed to make her drink, though we ALLLL know her and her drink due to the history of tantrums and displays whenever she comes thru)
2) the queen of the bunch - "short pike coffee in a venti cup with steamed 1/2&1/2 to the top" .....so a misto? NOOOOO she literally will NOT have it that you are paying for a SHORT drink so you are only going to get the amount of a SHORT drink cream or no cream!! When our cafe was open, we'd tell her over and over that she was more than welcome to fill her cup up with the cold 1/2&1/2 from the carafe on the condiment bar; however, we could only put the amount into the cup that was being paid for which when ordered as a short hot coffee with cream steamed would mean only short size (8oz) INCLUDING the cream. She once held up our DT for a FULL 10-12 minutes because the DT partners wouldn't take her drink back and fill the rest up with steamed cream nor give her MORE steamed cream in another cup for Free. She goes around to every single partner when she comes in until she gets one to give in and ring her up the way she wants and make the drink that she ISNT paying for. So far unfortunately our SM hadn't been here whenever she comes in or I'd straight send the SM right out to see what she does to get her way. We've documented the incidents and have the history of underhanded interactions ready for any complaints that get made because she's that type of 'karen'
So there's a few of mine, what about y'all? Get the "small in a big" tantrums at other locations too? Would love to hear some more of them!

Sometimes I’ll make it in size cup the customer ordered and then pour it into the cup they want it in. I do this in their face and it’s harder for them to argue. Of course they still do, but I can just point to the cup they paid for

You may have seen my post about it earlier this year, but we had a guy who brought in his huge 48 oz has station cup, and "THEY" always charge him for a grande, plus that 10 cent discount yaknow? Well, covid hit and we couldn't take personal cups anymore, and with GLEE I sat down his actual 16 oz coffee and he says uh, I wanted a grande. Yup, you sure did. That there my man is 16 whole oz just for you. He acted like it was a baby cup of coffee. I STILL feel vindicated

I get a grande iced coffee in a venti cup but I want that shit packed with ice. I’ve actually had to have them dump coffee out when I go to stores that aren’t my own bc they fill it too high. Like a bitch wants her extra ice haha but when I’m the barista in a situation like yours I do get just as irritated. When our cafe was open we had a regular that got 4 shots over ice venti cup with 6 pumps white mocha and he would always fill it to the top with the nonfat we had out on the condiment bar. For some reason I was the only one who was ever irritated by this though. So far I luckily haven’t experienced someone as bad as who you’re describing but I’m only 9 months in currently so I’m sure I’ll see these coming 😭

I'm bitches. If the straw goes in easily, there's not enough ice haha!
ResidentialSaltbox2 points3y ago
If I squeeze the cup and the liquid moves, not enough ice 😂
GreenTourmaline133 points3y ago
Yup! When I'm at other stores I think they assume I'm trying to do the cheap latte thing bcs I want an iced doppio, LIGHT cream EXTRA ice. More times than not, they've made me a light ice breve latte. I cry.

Like I have partner numbers... my drink is free anyway, why would I need to cheat the system?!!

Every time that I get a grande in a venti frap I pour it into a grande cup to measure and that’s all the frap they’re getting. I’ll put 3 inches of whip above and below it but that’s it

3 inches is 7.62 cm

One lady threw several fits about wanting to "substitute" part of one sauce/syrup for another. I don't remember exactly which, but the gist of it was something like this:
She wanted a grande pumpkin spice latte, but instead of 4 pumps pumpkin spice, she wanted TWO pumps of it, and she wanted to substitute the other TWO pumps with white mocha. But she didn't want to pay extra because it was still four pumps.
Of course that's not how it works and the POS doesn't let us ring it up that way - it charges you (I think it was like 60¢ or 70¢?) Anyway, she made a very big deal out of it and even tried to imply that our wonderful then-ASM on POS wasn't intelligent enough to understand her brilliance 🙄) but finally the SM put a stop to the nonsense.

Are you licensed? Cause I think that would be free at my corporate store.
Michigoose991 points3y ago
No, we're corporate. I might be remembering wrong (this was months ago) but she basically wanted syrup pumps she wasn't paying for, and she felt totally fine making partners' lives miserable over it.
