Sick time? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by _saalvatore
Does anyone know if sick time can be used for personal days or to take time off?? I’m about to have a convo with my sm about how I am just so worn out and need a break..
I’m about to hit my three years as a partner and I don’t think I want to leave the company just yet... although, I am just so worn out mentally and physically. It has actually gotten to the point to where it is affecting my home life and I need to do something about this.
Any suggestions? :/

It may be different in your state, take this sub's advice with a grain of salt. Per the Starbucks policy this is what I do: request time off, 1 + day (any day) and in the notes write "Dr. Appointment" and then in the punch log you can mark out 8hrs of sick time per day off for doctors stuff. You don't have to show or speak of any proof you actually went, and nobody can really ask.

When I transferred stores my SM freaked out when I did this. I held my ground and she called the DM who called Partner Resources and they finally understood this was allowed lol. If they are still not letting you do this, just call out sick. take care love

Lmao what does it matter to your SM? It doesn’t count against labor and if your SM unknowingly approves your fraudulent use of sick time and finds out later, the consequences would only fall on you.

Sick time can only be retroactively applied. Meaning, you can’t use it to pay for time that you weren’t initially scheduled. With this in mind. If you can effectively find coverage for the shifts that you want to take off, I believe you can use sick time to pay for those hours. Alternatively, unless you’ve used all of your vacation tome, you can definitely use that for some time off. I know that after 1 year partners start accruing vacation time at a per hour rate. To check your available time, you can go to your partner info and it will be under one of the tabs in the left of the screen.

You can use sick time for a variety of reasons. Because you are sick, an immediate family member is sick, you need to go to the police station, if for whatever reason you have kids and there is no one else to watch them, etc.

If you have a doctors appointment or have a procedure that requires a few days of recovery, you can request off and then use sick time because you are missing out on hours worked because of your health.

If you find coverage for a shift you just want to take off, for reasons that aren’t health and safety, you would use vacation time rather than sick time.

When you use protected sick time for shifts you are already scheduled for, your are not required to find your own coverage, but it is a courtesy if you are able to. The store might end up being short labor if no one can cover but using sick time protects you from the absence policy.
