Non-Standard Standard Question (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by SchemingPancake
So this might be dumb, but I’m wondering if anyone else has experience with this and what you did.

So I’m about to transfer to a new district. A friend of mine works in one of the stores, so I visited her store with her to check it out. I got a white mocha, and they gave it to me without a sleeve. She gave me a funny look when I asked the bar person to give me one. She said they don’t hand out drinks with sleeves unless a customer asks for it. I told her that white mochas should get sleeved because they are made extra hot by standard and thus get sleeves. She said she’d never heard that before. Her manager happened to overhear because she was on bar, and said that in their district, they’ve decided that they’re not serving beverages with sleeves unless people ask for them.

I’m a barista trainer, so I’ve read and taught the standard for sleeving cups multiple times. I find it odd that a whole district has seemingly decided not to follow what I thought was a country-wide standard. I don’t want to get in trouble, but I also don’t want to make drinks poorly or someone to get burned because their baristas do something different. I know I should probably not care this much over something so small, but since I’m transferring there soon, I just want advice on what to do. Has anyone else had an SM or DM who decided that your store wasn’t going to follow a standard? Did you just go along with it?

It may feel small but this sounds uncommonly unsafe! I'd be upset if someone handed me a drink with no sleeve. When my store ran out of sleeves we double cupped drinks to make them safe to handle, even though it ate into our stock. I can't fathom the thought process that leads to that conclusion, but I'd bring it up with whoever is above the SM since they seem so complicit with it

That was my thought as well. I’ll see how it goes when I actually transfer and try and see what led to that decision. I just thought it was super strange.

I’ve heard of this before but not as a district-wide standard. I’m not sure why you would give a hot drink to a customer without a sleeve, especially one that comes extra hot standard. For teas, I double cup and sleeve them as a safety precaution. Our hot water tap is literally 200°

at our store every hot drink is either double cupped like teas or have sleeves bc we don't want to get sued or anything

That’s pretty much how it is at my current store. Especially through the drive thru.

DMs have some discretion on this. My SM decided to only put sleeves on hot venti drinks in an effort to reduce paper waste.

There are some policies and standards that are core to the brand image, and others that are less important. Like you couldn't just decide a mocha frap gets a different number of pumps, but I'm ok with the sleeve because there's a clear environmental justification, and you're still offering them sleeves if they want. We don't have to be cookie cutter copies of the same store.

I understand that there is some variation, and stores/districts can do things a little differently. I just see it as a safety issue, so I wanted to see what other people thought. The environmental concern makes sense.
