What do you do when people ask for things still in the plastic bag? (self.starbucksbaristas)

We get asked pretty often not to take pastry items out of its plastic wrap, and commonly enough not to heat our sandwiches for people so they may heat them later. I feel like that's not starbucks compliant? Especially unheated sandwiches. Is this okay? My manager never says anything about it and when I asked her today she said she didn't know if it was okay or not, but that happy customers were good customers. Because of COVID we have free reign to assess and change the way our cafe runs (we issued a ban on baristas taking apart sandwiches for customers, for example, which we tried to do earlier but now that we're less high volume...) So if this is a huge no no, now is the time to know.

I second what has been said before me and would like to add thats there's nothing better than leaving a lemon pound cake in the plastic wrap and letting the custoner deal with wrangling it out of there.

I read this to my manager and she burst into laughter.

It’s allowed as far as I know, but just be cautious because I’ve had a customer flip out over the date on the plastic which was the production date because it was so long ago even though we told her it was frozen until that morning.

Nope, there’s nothing against giving customer food in the packages. Like you said, some prefer to heat it up later, and all our items are precooked so while customers might not defrost it all the way, there’s no way for them to undercook anything and get themselves sick.

I think it’s especially understandable right now between the virus and so many people working from home and actually having access to their own appliances instead of an office microwave.

We get asked to keep food, especially the pastries, in their plastic quite often, even pre-COVID. It’s not a problem.
