Green bean bad day. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by baebam
So I trained for a 1 1/2 weeks. In that time, I made drinks once. I got Covid and was out for almost a month. So I never got to work on my own and I feel like all that training left me. It’s now my second week back and I was put on bar for the first time. The other baristas were really nice and helped me as much as they could, but our district manager was there. I think she was trying to be nice, but she removed me from bar and announced to everyone there to help me so I can “be more confident in my green apron”. Like, I think she was trying to be helpful (and she is nice), but it was super embarrassing and it took all of me not to burst into tears right there. Not to mention that her inserting herself pissed off our shift and I think he was mad at me. He didn’t seem like he thought much of me the rest of shift and even thought I handed out the wrong drinks at one point even though I didn’t (and it was proven that I didn’t). I was really confident in being there up until this point and I don’t know what to do to get better. Does anyone have tips to help with bar?

Also, can someone list the steps of Customer Support? I think that trips me up a bit.

I’m so sorry you had a bad day, but I’ve always found focusing on the good days and how they’ve gone is super helpful for me! I know it’s easier said than done, and it takes a LOT of practice. Still, even those who work all their lives to be positive have bad days. Just recognizing that your worth doesn’t ride on the approval of every single person regardless of their positions is a great first step! Work is hard and there are a lot of things that can go wrong. I’ve been taken off bar because I was putting us behind before, and it really is a sucky feeling. But be gentle with yourself in ways you would be with a friend and realize that you’ll only do better and better! You’ll never get good on bar unless you’re thrown into the thick of things sometimes!

Also I’m sorry you felt called out by your DM. They really should recognize that that’s not the way to make someone feel welcome. I’m sure tomorrow will be better though, and at least now you know how it feels so if your DM does something like that to another green bean, you can relate to and connect with them and help others feel better!

CS kinda fluctuates, but the typical steps are as follows: 1) brew coffee, 2) sanitize and tidy the cafe/connect with a customer, and 3) complete a CS task as posted in the back room!

Sometimes baristas on the floor will need you to grab ice or milk or something, and make sure to let your shift know in case they need you to do something else first, but ALWAYS (unless it’s dire/“on the fly”) brew and check cafe first before completing a task. It truly does help ensure everything runs smoothly throughout the day!

Thanks so much! Things have gotten a lot better since that day for sure. Everyone at my store is super supportive. I appreciate that response and the explanation of CS!

I’m so glad!!! The first few weeks are definitely the rockiest. I’m so happy for you and I hope things only go smoother from here!

When I have free time or I’m on window I will put random drinks into the system and look at what it says in the boxes on the side or look at drink cards. Watching other people on bar has helped me too. Honestly the biggest help for me on bar was being thrown ‘into the pit’ and baisically put on bar with little to no training and figuring out drinks myself. It took me atleast three months to be even slightly ok at bar but it’s a learning process and I’m sure you’ll get the hang of it eventually. I cried in the bathroom my first day on bar because of how stressed I was. If your really that stressed out you can always ask to be put on an easier position for the day and talk to either your shift/store manager about what your going through.

Also I don’t really have a set list for what I do when I’m on customer support, I just ask people what they need, make sure everything is stocked etc, as long as I’m brewing when the timer goes off :)

Thanks! It’s all definitely really stressful. I appreciate that advice!
