What are the some annoying things new baristas do? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by dogmai17
Hi! I was recently hired and will be starting my first week of training soon. I know there's no way to avoid making mistakes, maybe spilling something, or feeling a bit annoying when you ask a ton of questions, but I was wondering if there's some big NO!s to avoid and/or what I can do to make my trainer's and new coworker's lives easier. Thanks!!

For new beans, there can be a gray area between staying planted in the position you've been given and just standing there not doing anything. It takes intuition and experience sometimes to find the right balance, but I've found myself "annoyed" (I use this term loosely; I try not to get mad at baby beans!!) when they're so eager to, say, be on bar that they keep leaving register and have to be redirected to their original position. *however* if you see everyone around you scrambling, and you're still standing there not asking what to do or if you can help, that can be off- putting as well. Basically, be kind, be helpful, ask tons of questions, be willing to be wrong (including making mistakes), and be gracious!!!

Dont guess, just ask :)

Never stick your hands in your pocket, and if you aren't currently engaged in your role (basically on registers and no one's there) ask the person nearest what you should be doing. 9/10 there is something that desperately needs to be done!!

The only thing that really irritates me is when people get territorial about their station and don't want any help, especially when they're new. Helping each other is normal and not an insult to anyone's abilities!

I agree with this one! Never be afraid to ask for or give help - no need to be territorial, what is your work is mine and what is my work is yours in a team. Especially if you’ve got a Bar 2 and it’s busy as heck through the drive-thru and not too busy otherwise! Also be sure to vocalize and ask, “would you like me to grab this caramel Frappuchino?” or “I’m finishing this iced caramel macchiato for you!” if they’re in the middle of 2 fraps and they’ve already pulled the shots on their bar for the macchiato.

Also if you can manage when you’re on DTO or Bar 2 to remember little things like wiping down bars, putting forgotten dairies back in the fridges, or restocking lids and/or cups, I’m sure it’ll go a LONG way for your crew!

It’s easy to feel like you HAVE to do things on your own at first, especially since it’s hard to learn unless you’re thrown into a certain position, but if I’ve got a few extra orders to get through and someone asks, “how are you doing, Em?” I’m never afraid to tell them I wouldn’t mind the extra help if they’ve got a moment. I’m also not afraid to let people know I’m doing alright if I’ve got a few orders coming but they’re relatively simple! Best part? My managers aren’t afraid to do the same. No matter how old or far you get, sometimes you need the help! That’s why you’re “partners.”

actually i really prefer it when they ask a ton of questions because my biggest pet peeve is when they just do whatever without asking anyone if they're doing it right and end up messing things up because they didn't bother asking. also taking the initiative and even just asking is there anything you can do is super helpful. for a while you'll probably just be given menial tasks like making whipped cream or brewing coffee or doing dishes but these are also important and can be a lifesaver when everyone else is scrambling.

All I can say is just do your best to remain teachable. There’s a lot of information coming to you at once and it’s super overwhelming! Especially when it comes to making drinks. If I were you I would study the recipes at home to help. And the one thing that annoys me about new baristas is when they get corrected when making a drink and then continue to make it wrong after that insisting that they learned their mistake as you watch them put only one shot in a venti latte for the third time today.. just ask lots of questions and remember that no one expects you to get it all immediately. Constructive criticism can be rough but it’s definitely needed 😊

it’s totally okay to make mistakes!! also, we all spill stuff all the time, it happens. just never be afraid to ask questions (it’s super helpful to be able to communicate with the green beans without feeling like we’re bossing you around! we just want to help you). if there’s anything you’re unclear about, your team is there to support you. it takes a couple months to actually get stuff down, so don’t worry about being a little slow or making mistakes— we expect it, we all did it, we learn & get better. Just keep a good attitude & you’ll be a joy to work with.
