Trying to get hired, advice? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by pink_haired_bitch
So I’m in Southern California and I applied last summer to many stores without hearing back, but I also had no job experience at the time. I recently re applied about three days ago to many local stores who happen to be hiring (according to job posting sites, all recent, I would assume from covid) and I’m a much better applicant now, I’m 19.

I have good job experience in retail now and I’m a much better applicant. I know it’s difficult to be hired at Starbucks but places are wanting people because of covid. Id prefer not to be working in a covid hotspot but I need money and I don’t have much of an option.

What tips do you guys have for getting hired as a barista? I’m studying recipes and protocol that I can find and trying to get ahead of the game a little. I’m also getting my food handlers permit for my county (supposedly it’s not necessary but can’t hurt to have it) and I’m just trying to think of anything else I could do. Should I call the store directly to speak to the manager about my application? Should I go in person? What time of day should I go/call? I’m a hard worker and I want this job so I’m willing to prove that, just hoping you guys have some advice.

Thanks in advance for any tips, advice, resources, or even a good luck :)

honestly i had to call my store like 6 times to get them to hire me haha dont be afraid to continuously reach out to the manager ! id call the store or go in the store and ask for the manager, tell them youre interested in a job and that you applied online. keep in mind that after this youll probably have to call 5 or 6 more times and nag them to get the process moving😂

I called several different stores several times before getting hired. It’s kinda hard to get in touch with the hiring manager so don’t feel bad about calling a lot. Pretty soon I got an interview and I think the most important part is emphasizing your ability to work with people and customer service skills. Don’t bother trying to learn recipes, you’ll learn that all in training and with experience. I’m six months in and still have to ask about certain recipes sometimes. Don’t bother with the food handler either, you’ll get paid to do that on the clock (or at least everyone at my store did. Anything you’ll need relating to Starbucks, any certification or extra training, you’ll do in store and you will be paid for it). I also showed that I did a bit of research on the company and showed that I genuinely wanted to work there. I talked about the unique benefits Starbucks offers (medical, dental, and vision insurance, free online college through ASU, pays higher than the state minimum wage, etc) and how Starbucks is an ideal place for me to work considering I’m a student and I’ve heard how flexible sbux is for students.
Anyways, good luck! I really like working here and I’m lucky to have a good team and good management, unlike a lot of people in this sub. I think a lot of the complaints about working for Starbucks is more a side effect of it being a billion dollar company rather than Starbucks specifically being an issue. Working underpaid for billionaires is gonna suck no matter what giant corporation you choose.

Thanks that’s super good advice, and glad to know about the food handlers and to bring up info about the company showing I researched it. Thanks!

When I wanted to be hired I had pretty slim experience but a great attitude.

Call the stores and ask when the hiring manager will be in. Make sure they arent partaking in the hiring freeze (because some districts arent hiring right now). Walk in with your resume and say "hey, I applied online a couple weeks ago but havent gotten any response, is your hiring manager here?"

Showing initiative got me the job. The day I walked in with my resume was my first interview. You got this!
