promotion advice? (self.starbucksbaristas)

so recently at my store we’ve had a switch in SM, plus we have a SSV leaving. this has a good portion of our baristas scrambling for a shift position. i know for a fact the new SM has spoken with a few of my coworkers about the position, but it’s been about a month and nothing has happened. i don’t know if she’s bluffing about a position for shift opening, but if she isn’t does anyone have any advice on working towards being a shift supervisor? i’ve been with Starbucks since February of this year, but compared to the other candidates i’ve also been there the longest. I’m not outstanding or anything, but i like to think i’m a decently hardworking barista, and i always jump to learn anything i can. and while i’m not super crazy about being a shift, i do think i could hold my own as one, especially compared to a few we already have. plus, the pay raise would help push me further towards moving into my own apartment, so there’s that.

Unless you’re wanting to stay with the company long term and if you’re willing to be used and abused then you should go for it. I personally am not going to ever try to be a shift. This is a second job for me and a whatever one at that. Shifts are really the backbone of each store. They do most of the work and if something goes wrong they are the ones that get the blame. Just be prepared.

totally hear you on the backbone part! i think i’ll probably be with them for a while, at least while i work through community college right now. i’m lucky enough that the district i work in has supervisors that at least communicate most things even if they do tend to screw over our shift supervisors.

I don’t have any advice for you but I was also hired in February and I could not imagine even thinking about becoming a shift until at least another year. Props to you for being willing to take on that responsibility.

haha thanks! yeah my incentive is mostly the pay raise 😅 i’m dying to get out of my house

I felt that lol. I’m currently just trying to make as much money as possible while I’m at community college to be able to afford to go to a four year school so literally everything I make goes toward my savings account and I can’t afford to move out as a result unless I wanna take out significantly more loans. I was really looking forward to getting out of the house when college came around but that’s gonna have to wait another two years
