Rude to inform parents about caffeine? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by golden_pinky
Many parents get refreshers/pink/dragon drinks, etc. for their kids and when the kid is especially young (like younger than 8, I've seen as young as like 3), I will courteously let the parent know that, in case they didn't know and wanted to know, there is caffeine in the refresher bases. Most of the times the parents thank me & tell me they didn't know. Other times, they say they don't care. I let them know there is no judgment, just think our signage is not informative enough.

Is it rude though?

Unpopular opinion: Sugar is worse than caffeine

This is an ugly truth I wish parents would realize. I literally cry on the inside when parents allow their kids to get venti caramel fraps with extra caramel and hella whip. Wishful thinking is that their little tummies can’t drink all that so they drink half. (Times I wish I was a dictator and controlled people’s health....)

I used to tell parents but they didn't care.

I had a lady get mad cause there was some miscommunication and I rang up a creme based caramel frappuccio for her son and it wasn't the right color. And I told her that it's because there's no coffee in it and she insisted that he wants the coffee in the drink. The kid was young enough to still need a booster seat.

So now unless they ask I don't say anything.

I tell everyone about 'hidden caffiene' in the menu because people don't know and may be incredibly sensitive to it (I for one am no longer sensitive to caffiene but I have a heart condition and would like to know this). I think you're trying to create the moment by making sure your customers are safe and healthy

I tell parents all the time! A lot of people think refreshers are juice.
BreannaLyne 1 points 3y ago
I tell them it's like a juice but there's caffeine in it

Nope absolutely not. Just be like “I noticed you have a lot of kids in your car and just wanted to make sure you knew that our refreshers have caffeine in them.” As long as you do it politely it’s fine, it’s better for them to know and if they get pissy that’s not on you. Once I told a lady that our refreshers have caffeine and she said “oh they’ll be fine...if not I have ibuprofen” cracked me up lol

If they're getting a coffee based frap for a little kid I just ask if they want the coffee in it. I'm not a health expert or anything but kids drink soda and eat chocolate all the time, so i don't think the caffeine in like..a tall pink drink is going to hurt them. but kids are really sensitive to anything bitter tasting, ie coffee. i don't think kids should be drinking any of this shit though, tbh.

I don’t bother because if a kid gets a pop no one really warns them about the caffeine. A refresher has only a tad more then a comparable sized pop.

If I see that that have a small child then I do inform them that the refresher bases are caffeinated and we can’t remove the caffeine. Most of the time they say thank you and ask for caffeine free drink options.

What caffeine free drinks do we have?? Besides the creme based frappe??
Kyenne_Pepper123 3 points 3y ago
For a toddler, chocolate milk, apple juice, passion tango tea. If the parent wants to get their 3 yr old a creme frap they can. It’s important for us to give alternative options.

I don’t mention it unless asked or unless they imply they are concerned about caffeine. Like someone else, I think the sugar is a way bigger issue, but either way, it’s not something I’m willing to inject myself into without invitation.

I used to care and mention it but they don’t care either unless the parents ask and yeah sugar is way worse than the caffeine in our drinks.
