Thoughts on being a Starbucks barista. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Samm4999
So I’ve been thinking ever since I got hired at Starbucks which is about a year ago, that being a Starbucks barista is NOT like being a barista at another coffee shop. First we don’t learn how to properly dial in espresso, we only learn our mastrena calibration which is biased on time of the shot. So that’s just one reason I want to move on to more enclosed coffee shops. Local ones too. I like contributing to the community, the coffee shops I’ve been thinking about also roast in house and there is NOTHING like working or being in a shop that roasts their own coffee. In all honesty the only reason I still work at my store is the people I’ve met there. I fucking love my coworkers and don’t wanna leave them lmao!

I'm in the same boat! I've been at my Starbucks for almost a year now, but I've never learned how to pull shots for real! only press the button... I want to pearn how to actually make espresso! and I wanna learn how to do a heart latte art! I wanna focus on quality not quantity :(
from my training, it seems like Starbucks just wants to pump out drinks of mediocre quality, they care more about speed than craftmanship
and of course the call of a small-time local coffee shop is very strong for me; I love supporting my community and I love small local businesses! 🌈🌟
but my coworkers are all so nice! I havent been getting out much other than work (even before covid came along) and my coworkers are my friends; everyday I go in it's like hanging out with some bros! I would miss them a lot if I went somewhere else 😔
I've been considering doing part time in each place, but I dont know how well that work out in reality... perhaps its worth a try tho! 👊💫

Right so I wanna get into home espresso but that a lot of money for the setup I want. Either way I’m probably gonna do it. I mean I don’t work for nothing am I right?

I’m not sure if I would do the whole part time thing. But yeah I completely agree. I’ve been thinking of getting a home espresso set up. My real awakening was when I went to my new favorite local coffee shop and tasted just a double shot from him. It was leaps and bounds above anything I’ve ever had. Now normally I can’t drink straight up espresso but trying his I realize that I can’t drink straight up Starbucks espresso. At Starbucks we rely on what we’re adding to the drink to make it quality and not the actual espresso. That’s why we use a dark roast for our espresso; one dark roasts are much easier to extract and that’s why we use it, it takes less time to pull. But me personally I like to focus of quality. Now the latè art I’ve gotten pretty good at. That’s no problem. But I would like to be able to take pride in what I’m serving. And not just doing the best I can with what I have.
