Going to school vs. getting fired(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by DaTortle_
Hi, I was just told by my home Starbucks that if I go to school and didn’t maintain presence on the scheduling sheet I would be fired. Is this allowed? And can’t I just work seasonally during the summer?
PS I will have been working here for almost two years now and whenever I leave for school this is a reoccurring problem

You can work seasonally at Starbucks, you just have to quit and get rehired each season.

You would have to take a formal leave of absence if you don’t want to be fired. Otherwise you would have to quit and get rehired each summer.

I did this last year with an old manager and was fired too
Edit: If I’m correct isn’t LOA 120 days?

Ya, they can’t let people stay employed if they’re not getting regularly scheduled otherwise every college student would do it. I’d just call PCC and ask about it and if a leave of absence applies for this because I think the length varies.

You have to work a shift every month or at least spend some vacation time to remain on the pay roll.

They definitely allow this in some stores. I had a "regular" who was a college kid with working partner numbers that worked one weekend a month for 8 hours total and 4 weeks in the summer at his home store 900 miles away. That's how you game the system for a forever discount. 🤣 But I'm pretty sure that the baristas who stay emoloyeed thru the school year have to show up once a month to stay employed.

True, I get that. It’s just thought that taking leave of absence has gotten me fired meanwhile the other baristas haven’t been touched under the same circumstances

They can fire you for this, but it's a jerk move. Your manager knew you were a student, and knew that you'd have to change your schedule when school started. I would talk to the DM about it.

Our store had had 3 managers in the past year. -_-

wow. That's a lot of turnover. Your DM should be a bit embarrassed at that rate of turnover. I'd try to explain to your current SM that you did this before last year without an issue. You just have to advocate for yourself and convince them that your an asset to the store and they should you welcome you back at the end of the school year.
