PSA BREVE IS NOT A DRINK IT'S A TYPE OF MILK (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Ladylillianrose
Don't stand there repeating breve at me like I'm an idiot when I ask you if it's a latte or a mocha. That's it rant over!
aprilraindropss 36 points 2y ago
one time a woman asked me for a “breve” and she came to the window, we handed her a cup of half and half and she said she meant hot coffee with half and half. everyone was confused.
kthrnlxndr 17 points 2y ago
café breve = espresso with steamed half and half! starbucks doesn’t have a button for it but it’s a thing

(doesn’t mean it isn’t confusing sometimes when people order it, or order something using the wrong wording)
darkwolf523 4 points 2y ago
So a latte with breve. Just do latte with breve milk on the register
kthrnlxndr 0 points 2y ago
well yeah that’s how you’d ring it up, doesn’t mean it isn’t a thing
lilBalzac 1 points 2y ago
I hope 1000 Karen’s scream at you for a McMuffin now. And then some pedantic prig says “technically it’s a thing you know”.
kthrnlxndr 1 points 2y ago
okay thanks

It may not be a trademarked starbucks drink, but it is an actual drink that I was surprised didn't have its own button. Source: worked in coffee shops before starbucks. I can see how my green beans would be confused by this. Honestly, I find starbucks' convoluted way of naming things quite annoying. I'm always baffled when new partners need to be reminded that mocha sauce is just chocolate. Or how we can name something the guava passion fruit drink when it has no passion fruit in it. I dont see why anyone is being down voted tho.

I think a lot of people know about ‘breve’ is an actual drink but as a Starbucks partner, I can confidently say that in this case, this customer just say a single word in their order and expect us to mind read and know it. This has happened so many times to any partner who’s ever had the misfortune of being employed at Starbucks. Customers just straight up come to the register, ignore your greeting (and will later say they were never greeted) and spit a word at you and put their card in the reader. Just ‘frap’. Or ‘coffee’. Or ‘dragonfruit’.

If “breve” is an actual drink served at traditional cafes, why would anyone expect that to be understood at Starbucks (a non-traditional cafe)?

Another point, there’s def two sides to the story: yes it is an actual drink & we should speak with the customer to make sure. But yes, the term is going to be confusing being ordered at Starbucks.

Some are being a little “holier than though” in this discussion. Let’s relax a little. Doesn’t matter your creds, coffee master (a defunct program), years worked. Get off your high horse partners. Sometimes people just want to let off a little steam.

I had a guy that insisted grande is a drink not a size

Sorry... you are the wrong one here. A latte made with Half and Half us often called a breve.

I’ve had this conversation with many customers and baristas. No one should EVER be a jerk to you about it though.

Stay awesome!

Is it a Starbucks trademarked drink? Thhheeenn we can't call it that. Just like 'dirty chai'.

Edit: freakin auto correct man

> Caffe Breve is an American variation of a latte: a milk-based espresso drink using steamed half-and-half mixture of milk and cream instead of milk.
> Ingredients
> 1 part espresso
> 1 part steamed half and half

> Caffè breve is an espresso-based drink that’s made like a cappuccino, but with steamed half-and-half instead of milk. This produces a very creamy foam. Try it if you want a decadently rich (but sugarless) espresso drink. You will also see it called the breve latte, cafè breve, and breve coffee. Breve means "short" in Italian.

So it's equal ratios of coffee and steamed half and half. Not what anyone ordering a "Breve." at Starbucks means. So they're off menu, ordering incorrectly for what they want, and assuming we'll mindread to know that they want a Starbucks version of a cafe breve, not an actual breve.

Which can also be normally made with heavy cream depending on the area. So really just order what you mean according to the menu you're given.

If someone just orders a breve, they want a latte made with half and half. A breve is a drink. A quick Google search answers that.

Not always, one time I had a lady order a "breve" so I made that but she wanted a vanilla breve latte. Another time a older lady ordered a "breve" and wanted just steamed half and half.

I was just stating that in general, it is a drink. Not a Starbucks drink. I was a barista for 6.5 years, SS for 2, and a coffee master for 3. I know the menu inside and out and know when to ask, "you want a breve latte or a different drink made with breve?" You literally need to ask your customers what they want.

I don’t know why this comment is getting downvoted because any barista that isn’t a green bean knows pretty much what the customer is ordering. I get that we don’t have a drink button for the name “breve” but there is a button for customizing the milk. I also get that after hard days at the register dealing with customers it becomes easier to feel offended by the customer because they order a drink differently than the way we normally call the drink out. Being downvoted because you made the distinction shows a lack of good customer service skill and more of a desire to complain about how much they hate their job. Hopefully the people downvoting can find something better suited for them while they finish their journey to wherever they are headed in life and take these as learning opportunities instead of just a way to showcase their superior knowledge of a fast food style coffee shop that caters to people who want a better experience than stopping at a 7-11 or some other convenient store to get their coffee.

Agreed, I just clarify with the customer what they want... It’s a lot easier than starting the argument on what Breve is or isn’t. I don’t understand the hate here as I clarify what customers want all the time. It’s not any different from asking if a customer wants whip on their drink or not, which we’re required to do.

Especially since many cafes do have a drink called Breve, it’s no shock that customers would assume starbucks had it too. You can’t say just order off the menu since a lot of our drinks aren’t on the menu, and as annoying as it can be, customers are allowed to customize their drinks however they want; this includes drinks not on the menu.

It takes an extra two seconds to ask if they meant a latte or something else. There’s no need to hate on customers if they’re not being directly rude to you, they’re allowed to make mistakes too.

A cafe breve is a specific style of latte that should be made in a 6-8 oz cup and be half espresso half steamed cream. That's what you find when you Google it.

Order off the menu. It's faster and kinder.
