I tried to apply for a personal leave of absence. My mental health is spiraling out of control, and working for my store is not helping. Starbucks isn't granting any personal leaves, and I wasn't sure if they'd even consider mental illnesses as a medical reason to leave.

The life is being sucked out of me with this company and my store in particular. I keep thinking back to when I was first hired and how much I loved being a barista. We now have a new SM and I don't like her at all. I know this covid stuff isn't helping matters, but I can't keep pushing on like I was.

I don't want to have to quit, but seems like I might have no choice. Starbucks is bullshitting us when they say they care for mental health. That's my opinion.

Thanks for listening to my tall in a grande rant.

UPDATE:

My SM texted me saying she received an email stating that Starbucks isn't allowing any LOAs. I called Sedgwick to see. They told me and are encouraging me to apply for partial disability if I can get paperwork from my family doctor.

My SM had no idea this was a thing... but I'm going to try it before deciding to transfer!!

First off, I'm so sorry, you deserve better. Second, call Sedgwick (if you're in the US) about an FMLA/ personal leave claim. It could be that if you have a psychiatrist/ mental health doctor who would provide documentation about needing a medical leave, you would qualify for a leave, regardless of current policy.

MENTAL HEALTH IS AS IMPORTANT & LEGITIMATE A NEED AS PHYSICAL HEALTH.

YOUR mental health is as important & legitimate as your physical health.

Ugh, thank you. Yes, I did call Sedgwick. They weren't very happy my SM said they weren't allowing LOA. They are encouraging me to do a partial disability leave. My doctor said she would help me with anything.

Starbucks is a lot about mental health, but I feel that not everyone sees the same way.

Appreciate your response ♥️

Of course, I hope everything goes smoothly for you.

Possibly you would be able to transfer to another store that would have a better vibe- also check into Lyra and even headspace for some mental health help & soothing practices, — sending positive vibes that you find the path that’s best for your wellbeing. 😌

I've considered transferring. I'm afraid my SM and DM wouldn't approve since we are so short staffed. I'm going to try though. Thank you!!

hopefully the transfer works out-maybe your DM knows of someone who wants to transfer to your location, & can move you to another store in need- thereby making two peeps happier & not losing you altogether then. ( if she’s a Savvy DM I’d hope she thinks that way!)

Wishing you all the best!
