Stop pulling your mask down to order (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Cuttis

Not only this, but please stop treating me like I am an ultra bitch for asking you to please wear it right
Assiqtaq 49 points 2y ago
And stop walking around with it under your nose, maybe as well?
submitizenkane 20 points 2y ago
Sometimes I joke with those people and call them Pinocchio, usually shames them enough to keep it on while they are in the store
Cuttis [OP] 4 points 2y ago
Yes! Or, as they order it keeps sliding down, down, down.. how do you not notice?
perfecktenschlog 90 points 2y ago
and don’t pull it down *and then lean closer to talk*
shadowhunterartemis 47 points 2y ago
oh MY GOD. I literally back away when they do this
SteampoweredClock 18 points 2y ago
They're oblivious to what that means though
curlygreenbean 13 points 2y ago
I take steps back and make it super weird on purpose.
Cuttis [OP] 12 points 2y ago
Same thing. I took a giant step back from a lady and she muttered something under her breath about ‘Michigan people’. She went back and got in her truck that was parked in the fire lane (of course) and I saw the Tennessee plates..so uh, how’s it going down south with COVID right now you dumb bitch?
ReroFunk 2 points 2y ago
Oh MOOOOOD
chuhai-drinker 9 points 2y ago
Seriously, just speak up if it’s loud, it ain’t hard
prillykai 84 points 2y ago
The only time I will accept this is if the partner working is deaf. The deaf community is easily overlooked during this pandemic. A lot of deaf people rely on reading lips. That's the only time it would be okay to pull down a mask to order.
harleyhoudini 51 points 2y ago
Yes we do rely on reading lips, but you can also write on the receipt paper to communicate.
prillykai 19 points 2y ago
That's true. My shift supervisor is deaf, and he always just tells people he reads lips.
harleyhoudini 24 points 2y ago
Side note: how does your shift run the floor without the headset and the inability to listen to conversations? I’m curious because I’m in the running for the position and don’t want that to be a concern of my store manager/district manager.
prillykai 28 points 2y ago
He is constantly checking in with us and coming over to drive to see what he can do. He has found a couple of us that he can trust to kind of help him if things go wrong. I know you'll do absolutely fine. I know if I'm there with him, I help him listen for things he might not be able to catch. He hasn't had any issues thus far.
different_as_can_be 18 points 2y ago
we have a lovely customer who always pulls up or comes in with a pretyped note on her phone with her name, states she’s deaf, and her order. currently trying to learn conversational ASL to talk to her bc she loves seeing me try really dang hard.

side note: i’d die for this woman
Mariiriini 9 points 2y ago
I use a transcript app. I speak and hold the phone at face level and they can read a really accurate closed caption of what I'm saying.

I'm HoH, I use it to hear people if they are just too quiet. Same idea, just angling the phone towards them.
-zombie-squirrel 1 points 2y ago
What is the app? I have a drive through customer who is deaf and communicates in asl and I’d like to serve her better. I’m brushing up on my asl but I’d like to have other options as well. (Also any other tips or sites for asl learning would be great!)
Mariiriini 1 points 2y ago
It's "Live Transcribe", I believe it's a Google app but might be just Google sponsored.
Assiqtaq 3 points 2y ago
Someone shared that you can use Google Translate, or another text to speech app, to speak and have it listen and type it up for you. Might help.
shosh_c 23 points 2y ago
Drives me crazy
JCaligirl420 22 points 2y ago
Or pulling it down to hear us speak, like is it closing your ears?
GreenTourmaline13 3 points 2y ago
I fight the urge to pull my mask down to hear customers. I have sensory and audio processing issue where if I'm on register and for some reason the *clear* plexi shield and the my mask/ their mask just makes it impossible to hear, and subconsciously I'm just trying to remove one of the "filters." I've finally stopped actually pulling it down, though, but do laugh and tell customers 5000x day how hard it is to process. Anyway, that's one reason why some of us do this
JCaligirl420 4 points 2y ago
The way I that I’ve phrased it, it’s like when you’re driving and you turn the radio down to look for a street, especially when you’ve never been there. And yes I understand the sensory processing part of the mask situation so that makes sense, my youngest is on the spectrum, and I’m majoring in psych which an emphasis on sensory, behavioral, and neurological disorders. So that may be it.
Ziaheart 3 points 2y ago
If anything, wouldn't pulling it down tug the ears close even more? Or maybe it'll aim them at the speaker.
CoffeeChesirecat 17 points 2y ago
I asked a lady to please keep her mask on in the store and she ripped it off her face and started screaming at me. I tried to point to the signs that ask patrons to wear a mask and explain that there is a pandemic, but she just kept yelling louder and louder until I walked away. I feel so defeated after this week. Why is this still so new to people almost 6 months later?
Cuttis [OP] 5 points 2y ago
You have every right to ask her to leave the store! Both for the non-compliance with the mask and for yelling at you
CoffeeChesirecat 1 points 2y ago
I usually don't have a problem with being assertive, but the day before, another customer called corporate on me for not letting them use our bathrooms. I was too paranoid about a second strike against me. 😣
Cuttis [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Don’t be! If the bathrooms are closed, they’re closed! Make sure when this stuff happens you let your manager and/or DM know about it. They need this kind of feedback right now (not just speculation; my manager and DM have told me this). And depending on how heated the situation got you might want to fill out an incident report when this stuff happens..I’ve been paranoid myself about having to be so forward with people but I’ve been assured that I’ll be backed up if I’m standing up for our safety and following the law (I’m a Michigander and our governor is amazing). Think about it: if a customer was stabbing another customer inside the store you wouldn’t be like ‘if it’s not too much trouble could you please stop doing that? And here’s a $4 coupon for your next visit’. So if you have to channel your inner warden to keep shit on lock (no touching!!!!) then do what you have to do.
CoffeeChesirecat 1 points 2y ago
Thanks for your thoughts. I agree. Fortunately, my wonderful shift had me fill out an incident report right away because we were verbally threatened. SM and DM followed up, so her threats against my job were empty. However, the news seems to be filled with violent and aggressive non-maskers that take out their anger on other customers and employees. You just don't know how far some of these people will go.
shadowhunterartemis 8 points 2y ago
Yes, thank you
amazing_redhead 7 points 2y ago
Should post this on r/starbucks
shadowhunterartemis 7 points 2y ago
😭😭😭😭

my favorite person was the one who came in without wearing a mask and then decided it would be a good idea to stand on her toes and tip her head up like a lil baby bird so she could get her mouth just over the plastic and breathe all over me instead of speaking up
Cuttis [OP] 4 points 2y ago
They love to try to maneuver around the glass anyway they can. I had one skinny little contortionist slide between two tables blocking the mobile orders and reach between two plexi shields to help himself to a stopper
busymom35 2 points 2y ago
How about: pulling down their mask and leaning around our plexiglass 🤨.
RareLingonberry 2 points 2y ago
I always catch people the second they do it and tell them to put it back on. Same with trying to lean behind the shields.
official_koda_ 2 points 2y ago
And wear it in the damn drive thru. People could care less that we have to work with the public and be exposed to people all day long.
madraykiin 2 points 2y ago
i’ve started pulling mine down too when that happens. i’d say they take the hint 60% of the time
Cuttis [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Omg that is such a good idea lol
madisonsinclairlowry 0 points 2y ago
I would be leaning over the counter to try to hear them. I have very selective hearing and reading lips was how i mostly communicated.
