switching to college campus/licensed store(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by abigail3087
so as the title sorta explains, im starting college in like three weeks (AHHHH) and id like to keep working at the bux (ive been here for just under two years). i was wondering if anyone could tell me what its like switching from corporate to licensed or a campus one and how different its gonna be. i legit know nothing about licensed stores except that my numbers dont work there so any information/advice is welcome. some questions i have: - what are the benefits like? - is pay very different? (MA->NY) - are they all really that bad? (i stalk this sub and read every horror story) - will it be acceptable to apply to be an ssv even though i was only a barista at home? (i wasnt sure on this one because i have just under 2 years experience but ig theyre different companies bc campus starbucks isnt starbucks starbucks)
edit: haha i forgot to mention i work at a drive-thru only store (like we dont have a cafe at all) so like if anyone can talk to me about how much those differ, much appreciated)

Idk a lot either...but what I do know is that liscened stores have almost nothing to do with corporate, they are part of the company they are in, meaning you get the benefits/pay wage of that company (example: Starbucks on Target...Employees are considered Target employees, they get paid by target, they get Target benefits) So it would basically mean that you have to quit starbucks (corporate) and get hired in the other liscened stores...idk how it works on colleges but I would assume it would be probably the same... Maybe as a suggestion (If you wanna keep all your starbucks benefits) Try transfering to a corporate store that is close to your college/dorm...it’s so much easier to transfer inside of the company and like I said, you get to keep your benefits...Your pay will change tho cause you are moving to a different state

thank you so much!! i didnt know the thing about company ownership (like tarbux stores) so i appreciate it a lot. i was trying to transfer to a store thats about a mile away from my dorm on a main road so not too bad of a walk there and back but transfers are frozen rn and so im considering the store in my school’s student center🙃

I worked at a college Starbucks for a little over a year and it’s just so much easier than a corporate store. The peaks are weird and it’s going to be incredibly slower than anything you’re used to. You’ll get paid based on the over owning company (my college Starbucks was under the umbrella of the dining company so we got paid through Aramark) but it should be comparable to your current pay. I would start as a barista and just let them know when applying you’d like to work up to management. Idk how big your campus is or anything but at mine we didn’t have official positions for shift leads we just had those of us who’d worked their a while who eventually became barista trainers and would be in charge of opening/closing ect. without the actual title. Regardless, bc if ur background they’ll think you’re amazing bc you know how to do everything and should move you up pretty quickly. They’re honestly not bad as long as you’re not expecting it to be like a normal stand alone Starbucks. They kinda just operate entirely in their own relaxed bubble.

It's hard to say exactly that it will be like because all license stores run differently.
I worked at Target Starbucks for a year and they paid $11 an hour whereas when I worked at just Starbucks I made $9.60.
I think Starbucks has a lot of nice perks, you get a pound of coffee a week, free drinks on shift and a free meal on shift and a discount. Then the benefits are okay, they claim to be great, but I never felt like they were. I also think Starbucks paying as awful as they did made the fact that they claimed to offer such nice benefits worse. I just wanted a decent wage.
A few things I picked up on. Starbucks sends you home if its dead, license stores never do that. Target doesn't allow free drinks, no free beans, nothing like that. Which sometimes sucks tbh. They also don't allow tips.
One thing I struggled with at Target was how they did not follow Starbucks standards. A lot of my coworkers made drinks wrong and guests were used to it to the point where they would get mad when you made it correct. I adjusted but I never liked it.
Right now I work in a hospital that serves Starbucks. It's a mini starbucks. They pretty much have everything but refreshers. I make $15/hour and my shift is 6-2:30 M-F. No holidays or weekends. I get free drinks during my shift and I can collect tips. The benefits are amazing and I got them right off the bat. It's me and one other girl. I'm in charge of ordering everything and maintaining inventory so I'm literally my own boss. I LOVE it.
I prefer the hospital over all the other places. I'm given a lot more freedom and they aren't as crazy about abiding by Starbucks "rules".
