Fruit flies are EVERYWHERE at my store. Literally everywhere. When I walk into the back I have to swat in front of my face so I don’t walk into them. It’s disgusting and I’m afraid they’re going to start making their way into the drinks. Each night we pour bleach and hot water down each sink and drain and fill them up with ice to combat the flies but that’s not helping. Does anyone have any other tips on how to get rid of them??

Insist that your manager call pest control.

I’ll probably have to if these quick fixes don’t work. It’s so disgusting. Thank you!!

Pest control kills the bugs you have, but it won't stop them from coming back. You have to do better at cleaning to keep them away for good.

We put all our juices and lemonades in the fridge overnight and wipe down the services that the teas and refreshers are on with pretty strong cleaning stuff. The sugary juice and the teas and lemonades are probably the culprit. The openers just put them back out. Also maybe putting the inclusions somewhere else during close?

We wrap all our inclusions and syrups with plastic wrap which has helped a lot! What cleaning stuff do you use? We usually just whip down with the sanitizer water, but I doubt that’s cutting it any more

This might be bad but we use restroom cleaner bahahah. It’s powerful ish

At your store be sure to
1. Sweep and mop under fridges EVERYDAY. Even BOH! 2. Sweep and mop under shelves EVERYDAY. 3. Make sure mop sink is clean 4. Be sure there is a cover on rag bin. 5. Keep bananas in a container of some sort, or even the fridge. 6. Pastry cart trays typically have crumbs on them, I clean them in the Hobart every few days. 7. Don’t leave the tops of pumps dirty over night, and also be sure to run syrup bottles under hot water to get the caked on syrup off. Same goes for espresso machines... be sure to wipe off any caked on syrups off the machine. 8. I know it’s a clean play thing, but cleaning drains everyday is a huge thing! 9. Spot sweep FOH before leaving at night. 10. Be sure you move tables in cafe and at least sweep under them.
I know it’s a lot, and most days there simply is not enough labor to do all of these things, but just try your best. Also tell your store manager (or even a shift) to call in flies to facilities. I’m a shift and every 2 weeks I call facilities to send someone to spray for flies. Even if I just see one...

Thank you so much!! I’m literally going to take this list to my manager tomorrow haha

also if y’all have bananas at your store you should get rid of them or hide them, my store had a problem with flies and we stopped ordering bananas and problem was solved

We just threw away our bananas tonight.. The boxes were literally infested with flies, it was so nasty. Thank you so much!!

We had a fly situation that wasn't nearly that bad and the pest control service had a guy coming every night after close for a few days... to do what, idk. But it seemed to dwindle the numbers of them substantially. Just hoping we can keep it that way!

They spray the outside of the building with a spray that is poisonous to flies! It will typically last a month or so.

CLEAN AND SANITIZE YOUR GARBAGE BINS.

It's always harder to control in the summer, but most of the time the problem is that we're not cleaning good enough. Pest control will kill the fruit flies you have at the moment, but if you don't get the cause of the problem they'll keep coming back.
\- wipe up syrup on the bar, on the wall, anywhere you see it, and places hiding that aren't so obvious
\-pull out the fridges and sweep and mop underneath them
\-cover your inclusions over night
\-clean your mats daily
\- if you have bananas wrap them up overnight and inspect them every night and toss out anything that's going bad.
carmela891 points2y ago
we have the same issue and literally can’t get rid of them
