Me: oh well Starbucks requires everyone to wear a mask inside
Customer: what about drive thru? What’s your policy?
Me: there are no requirements for drive thru other than try not to directly touch each other
Customer: no...YOUR POLICY. What is YOUR preference.
Me: (absolutely terrified because I know people have been doing this to berate employees at other places) well...I uhm...I would prefer everyone wear a mask because I and my family are in vulnerable categories
Customer proceeds to put his mask on and I...like...it’s been a while since I’ve seen some like basic common decency in drive thru so like I just thought I’d share that. He didn’t argue with me, he didn’t complain, and he genuinely cared about how I felt. I’m like almost in tears because it was so civil and such a simple act. Why can’t more people be like mysterious drive thru man?

The real power move is wearing a mask every time you have direct contact with anyone from outside your immediate household.

That’s nice! For most part, our DT customers don’t wear a mask, but I appreciate those that do. It’s also nice when I’m chatting with them and they purposely put one on to talk to me.

i refuse service in drive for no masks. we’re not 6ft apart and we have the right to refuse unsafe work.
sparkytheboomman6 points2y ago
Damn I wish I could do this. I keep asking my supervisors about it because I feel very uncomfortable working drive through with people not wearing masks, but they’ve told me that we can’t ask them to wear masks in drive and that we’re even supposed to offer it as an alternative to people who don’t want to wear them but ??? We’re less than six feet apart and there isn’t plexiglass or anything—literally no protection. But its just us being exposed and not other customers like they would in the cafe so I guess we don’t matter?

I wear a mask when I go to drive thrus anymore but damn dude. The whole point of curbside and drive up services is so customers that may not want to/be able to, dont have to. What if they specifically came to the drive thru because they forgot their mask at home on accident? That's kind of a being a dick just to be a dick at that point.
pinkotters24 points2y ago
im sorry, I’ve been trying to understand your point but as a customer, I always wear my mask even when in a drive thru or with curbside pick ups. We must remember that we’re a mid-pandemic, there’s hardly any excuse to forget a mask by now (I keep an extra in the car just in case) and it’s so easy to do when you only need it for about 2 minutes. After all, getting coffee really isn’t essential. If they forgot their mask, I’d rather just have them go home than risk the poor barista at the drive thru just trying to get through their day safely. I don’t think it’s being a dick, it’s just taking safety precautions as they should :)

It's being a dick, at an absolute stretch, to protect your life.
I don't get to "forget" my ID and still do things that require one. I don't get to "forget" wearing clothes and not be treated differently for it. if you "forget" to wear your seatbelt you'll still be fined. I have a couple cloth masks and keep one in my backpack, one in my purse, with my apron, the rest in a little basket hanging on the coat rack. Grab my keys from the coat rack, put on a mask, grab my bag, leave. Dead simple. Car drivers can put another emergency mask in their glove box.
We are allowed to refuse unsafe work. If their store wants to allow maskless people in drive, they need to put another partner in that position.
Customers having """justified""" reasons not to protect others doesn't mean COVID skips them or those they come in contact with. I'm not going to die for minimum wage halfway through my degree because Karen has exercise induced mild asthma and can't wear a mask at complete rest for 50 seconds.

> What if they specifically came to the drive thru because they forgot their mask at home on accident?
Then they should go home and get their mask. If you fuck up, you don’t get rewarded. If I forget my ID, I can’t buy weed. It’s my personal responsibility to make sure I have everything I need before I leave my house for the day.
Despite what corporate says, Starbucks never has been and will never be an essential part of anyone’s day. People will live without Starbucks, but partners may not live if customers show up without masks.

SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK
toastyblunt5 points2y ago
go ahead and drive thru for me sis
POWderblisscuit20 points2y ago
This is AWESOME! I \*try\* to do this whenever I get riled up by something or someone. Do a complete 180 and validate that person's concern. The look of disbelief in their faces -- I've left more than one jaw hanging open by doing this.

This is something I try to explain to some of my family members who are all anti-mask. You do realize that by wearing a mask, the worst thing that you have done to yourself is put a thin piece of cloth on your face, and you also probably made many people around feel a lot better and safer. Like, that's the worst case scenario. You made someone else feel safe.
Saradigm3 points2y ago
We had a lady come inside and proudly announce she wasn’t wearing a mask because she didn’t “believe in them.” Like ok bitch but I don’t want to be at risk because you’re stupid.

Love this—I feel like not enough positive experiences get shared on this sub.

I cannot tell you the amount of times I have been asked about how I feel about the regulations and rules during the pandemic. I just say “No comment” and reassure them that they’re drink or food item is on the way then close the window. And that’s on Peppermint.
