Always ask the shift on duty (or experienced partner) to clarify if you are confused; better to take a few seconds to ask questions than a minute or more to remake a drink.
Long shots means the machine uses more water pulled through the grounds and you end up with a diluted shot that takes a longer time. Ristretto shots are the opposite, less water. When on bar you simply press the 'L' or 'R' button just before pulling shots.
Upside down is generally for caramel macchiatos and it just means that instead of the shots going in on top of the milk, they want their shots mixed in with the vanilla syrup before the milk goes in.
Breve simply means they want their drink made with half and half. I was once told breve is only used when its steamed half and half but rhats provably more of an original Italian use because lots of customers ask for iced beve lattes.
