Hey all! (self.starbucksbaristas)

Just a lil bitty question,
So i work at a licensed store (a kiosk in a grocery store, not a corporate store) and I’m wondering if it’s worth the switch to a corporate store. The benefits are a lot better at a corporate store, but I’m not sure how much worse the clientele will be lol

I worked at a different coffee shop inside of a bookstore many years ago. It's a weird dynamic when the manager doesn't understand anything about how a food service business works. Just very laid back. Hair down, pretty nails, etc. I don't know if you are allowed to accept tips, but my hourly pay + tips (because I was almost always alone or with just one other person and we tiped out whenever someone left or came in) at the kiosk was more than I make at starbucks plus tips here 14 years later. It was much more chill, even being "busy" was easy. Cleaning was also easier, since a cleaning crew did everything. I did my dishes, wrapped my in use products, and wiped down counters and cabinets. The cleaning crew did all floors, sinks, walls, and merch dusting during the overnight. No kicking junkies out of bathrooms. No having to call hazmat because someone was pissed about being told to wear a mask and took a dump on the floor.

Wow, remembering it, if your spot has these perks....don't leave. Corporate is physically harder and will pay you less. The benefits are amazing on the outside, but only if you are able to use them. They throw around the phrase "total pay" a lot....but if you have a degree you can't use asu for another, health insurance is very good, headspace makes me roll my eyes, Lyra isn't something I use. Spotify premium is nice, but only 11 a month. Make sure you can pay your bills on starbucks $$.

Our spot is lucky to make ~400$ a day, its that quiet. Its pretty much what you described, its just that it’s literally not busy enough. I get paid to stand around. Minimum wage in Alberta is $15/hr, and since we’re a nice halfway between being starbucks/grocery employees, we don’t get raises like the rest of the store’s staff. I’m also not allowed to take tips (grocery store’s rules, apparently i could lose my job if i did).

I’ve worked here for about a year and I really like the starbucks aspect of my job, just not how quiet it is. I think i just want change within the barista-subsection of food service.

Thanks for your input :)

It will definitely be busier, and a lot more stressful! And I don't know about Canadian pay and benefits. They may in fact be better than the US.

I think so, in Canada they offer health/dental and also they offer assistance with tuition for students among other things, and in some places I used to live (like Whistler, BC) they offer staff accommodations. Its dependant on where you are, but the benefits here seem worth it?
