Need Advice: Transfer Denied (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by LessAcetylcholine
A little background: I've been with sbux since November and I have worked an avg of 30-35 hours every week since. I care a lot about my job and I try to go beyond what is expected of me to make the lives of my partners easier. I am starting grad school in 2 weeks and I'm moving to a college town. I guess I was naive to think transferring will be super easy. Basically I explained to the store's SM that because of COVID I have no idea what my schedule will look like and if it's possible for me to start working once a week (cause I need money for groceries/food) and then open my availability as soon as I learn more. She then literally said "uh no."

So.. here are my questions because some of the things she said to me didn't make sense.

1. Is there a quota on the number of partners a store can have? Because she told me she would think about it if she had enough partners but she doesn't and she needs all hands on deck. If that's the case wouldn't ANY help be better than none?
2. She told me that I can try other stores in the town but she's telling me right now that I probably won't find any store that will take me. Is there literally nothing I can do if no stores will take me?

I contacted another store after this conversation but I'm panicking due to what she said. I feel pretty bad since I've given this corp my all (even got partner of the quarter this quarter) and because I'm going back to school I'm suddenly unwanted.

While you may think that some help is better than none, your manager may think it’s better to find someone who can offer more hours. Managers spent a lot of time and effort when the preferences came out to make sure that they could give people their preferences while keeping their stores afloat. You want to give up over 20 hours which means finding someone else to take them. If your manager has to hire someone new, she’s probably rather be able to offer them 30-35 rather than 22-27.

Starbucks corporate policy requires you to have at least 12 hours a week of availability, so you have to be willing to give at least that. However, your manager can require more for you to work at their store. For example, my manager won’t hire anyone who doesn’t have Saturday and Sunday availability. If you can’t open your availability to match the needs of the store and you can’t find a store that can support your availability, then, unfortunately no, you won’t have much choice.

the number of people a store manager can have is dependent on the sales they are making (from my knowledge). also, from what i have been told, if you claim that the transfer is because of location they can’t really deny you. talk to your current SM to help you with the transfer request form
