asking for ids with partner numbers puts trans partners at risk(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by sweetpoisions
like... yeah. i get you know about the tiktok trend or whatever but PLEASE think about the ways to validate identity besides legal names. maybe what store theyre from! their store number or manager! ive had this happen both to partners visiting my store AND to me. try and be considerate.
EDIT: the replies are giving me brain damage so just to clarify 💕💕 no i do not have an actual solution. the solution is for corporate to fix the issue. im just asking partners to be understanding when it comes to trans issues considering how many trans people work here! ✨✨✨ if youre cis and youre thinking of replying to this post with your own hot take i have a fun secret recipe you should try 😊😊 try mixing in drain cleaner into your next drink 🤡

Asking for store number or manager isn’t too effective since I’d have to go validate that info bc who knows that off the top of their head. I don’t understand your experience but I think it’s corporate’s fault and not partners if this is actually making you uncomfortable. They aren’t asking for ID to make you feel exposed or anything, we just wanna get our job done quickly
nate_smithws2 points2y ago
You can also get a store number and managers number off of any SMs businesses card, usually left out. And even if you gave out that information, there is no way to know if that is actually your store
[deleted]2 points2y ago
Yeah, I sympathize with OP but they also didn’t provide any reasonable solutions to checking ID
nate_smithws1 points2y ago
You aren’t required to ask for an ID if they have a partner card
[deleted]1 points2y ago
Oh yeah for sure, I believe the post was referring to those with no partner card though
_coffees20 points2y ago
I’d recommend adding your partner card to the Starbucks app or ordering a physical copy. Since you would have to go onto the hub to set this up, ID shouldn’t really need to be validated in those cases.
_Pulltab_2 points2y ago
Surprisingly, a lot of partners don’t know that you do this. I’ve never come across anyone in my district that was awake until my new SM started. I’m currently traveling and in another state I told the person at POS I had partner numbers and that I would just scan them in and she got flustered and confused and wound up not taking my markout and just using my stars instead. I didn’t realize it until after she’d finished the transaction.
jfcsydney2 points2y ago
i asked for my card to be scanned on the app & the girl taking my order said no and asked for my ID and partner number instead .. i guess it just depends on the person?
StormTheParade5 points2y ago
No, this is against policy.
Policy is ID, Partner Card (if you have one), or your app. The only way for somebody to get your information from the app is if your account is compromised, or if you screenshot it and share that with someone else.
_coffees4 points2y ago
Yea, it may have been a new barista or maybe they just weren't aware. You could maybe try asking for a shift supervisor or manager at that point? Also, there are many other potential forms of identification such as a debit card, library card, and so on, I think it would be acceptable to show that to them and not need a picture identification but you're right that it really depends on the person.
StormTheParade7 points2y ago
ID or Partner Card (if you have one) is policy per the store operation manual and the partner guide. If you aren't comfortable giving your ID, you should be able to request a partner card. And if you don't have a partner card, then you can add it to the app. That's why people ask - it's corporate requirement.
You only need to verify this if you aren't at your store or have never worked at that store before (unless the partner(s) don't know you).
You shouldn't be asking people here not to follow policy, you should be getting ahold of PCC/corporate about the problem with verifying with ID so they crack down on ensuring everyone employed has a partner card. In my 2 years with the company, I only ever saw one partner card, because it isn't taught that you need to request one.
(I also used to break policy by asking that people verify by giving me their surname tho, bc I lived in DFW where there's a starbucks every ~5 miles or so)
sweetpoisions [OP]-1 points2y ago
i never asked anyone to "not follow policy" im just asking for people to consider the struggles of trans people, and be more understanding when someone is hesitant about showing their id. i have my partner card on my app and have still had this happen to me BTW
StormTheParade6 points2y ago
> i have my partner card on my app and have still had this happen to me BTW
This shouldn't happen!
It's so hard because training is so spotty with this company. They really should provide partner cards on hire, but they don't even teach people that they're even available, yet they require them to get your discount elsewhere. It's fucking dumb.

But you did say following policy "puts trans people at risk," since asking for ID is the policy. GENUINE QUESTION: What do you think would be a possible solution?
Pilatesbeforelattes6 points2y ago
How does asking for an ID put anyone at risk? Risk from what?
Narthithuth4 points2y ago
This. What risk? If a partner mistreats you after showing ID you can have their head, but honestly. This is work stuff, redeeming an employee benefit is serious stuff.
paradise-trading-832 points2y ago
If people are that worried just pay full price
sweetpoisions [OP]0 points2y ago
"what risk" did you forget that trans people are oppressed or are you actually braindead. 😊😊😊
drthplagueis1 points2y ago
Yikes, I would have never thought of that. Thank you for sharing!

Full support. My legal name has no resemblance to my preferred name. Absolutely none.
I have it on my phone, but I've had partners adamantly ask for my ID even with that. It's embarrassing, and I'm not even trans. I just changed my name. I can't even imagine the pain of having your dead name and gender compared to you today and being scrutinized over it.
We ask first and last, and make smalltalk about the store they're from. "From Texas" or "That one on the corner" doesn't cut it, they get ID'd. You can tell when someone is mindlessly talking about their life and when they're spinning tales.
mykotman122 points2y ago
So your last name is also different on your ID vs what’s in the system? My preferred name is completely different from my actual first name (my real name is waaay too complicated), but my last name is the same. As long as the last name matches on ID vs what’s in the system, you should be fine.
Mariiriini1 points2y ago
I have a super generic last name. It also doesn't eliminate that someone is going to look at me, look at my partner name, look at my legal name, and they WILL comment. I don't need that shit, I changed it for a very good reason.
mykotman122 points2y ago
When a partner checks the ID, they just following the policy and doing their job. You can’t expect partners not to follow policy and possibly get in trouble just because you don’t like it.
Mariiriini1 points2y ago
Oh I swore I had you blocked, how strange.
It is not policy to check ID if you have your partner cars in the app or physically.
sweetpoisions [OP]2 points2y ago
e x a c t l y!!! im not expecting people to memorize sore #s or every manager in the area. just asking that you dong automatically think someone is trying to get free shit when they dont want to use their id. its super easy to tell when people use other's numbers (we had a few people trying frequently BEFORE this tiktok thing took off.) try and be kind to others! 💕
GymLeaderFlame1 points2y ago
I mean I’ve never bothered to learn the ASM’s and SM’s of the other stores in my district so I don’t see how effective asking the partner who their manager is, and when it comes to other ways to check I usually ask if they have their partner card on the mobile app or like their hat/apron on them. I pretty much always have at least one hat or an extra apron in my car at all times.
Mariiriini1 points2y ago
The point is if they have a name. A partner knows their managers name. It's odd enough of a question for an imposter to stumble on, but not odd enough to be weird. It's totally normal to ask someone where they work and then ask if so and so is the manager still. Or you heard they got a new one recently.
misguidedghostman-7 points2y ago
People really ask for ID? That’s crazy
_coffees8 points2y ago
Since the TikTok trend, I've had multiple people come to my store who were obviously using other partners' numbers. When I try asking them for any form of identification (not just a picture ID) they're excuse is that they lost their purse/wallet or it was stolen. When I asked them about their home store they couldn't even give me a legit location without pausing to think for an unusual amount of time. It's crazy that people are actually stealing partner's numbers but it is something that we need to take into consideration and deal with nonetheless.
misguidedghostman2 points2y ago
I had no idea this was a common occurrence now. We rarely get other partners coming through our store. I need to get myself a TikTok. Why’d I get so downvoted for not knowing this 😭
mykotman121 points2y ago
You got downvoted because checking ID is a company policy when people try to use their numbers (unless the person has an actual partner card or has it linked to their app).

This mother daughter duo came a few days ago and the mother proceeded to give her “daughter’s partner numbers” while she is in the passenger seat and when I ask for ID she claims to not have it, all the while the daughter is not saying a word. I ask for any picture ID (thinking she may be a minor so like a school ID or a permit would work) she still gets argumentative saying no she wasn’t ID’d last time she was here, and I literally poke my head around to try and speak directly to her and said “are you sure you have no ID?” She literally does not even look in my direction and keeps staring straight ahead. The mother yells “excuse me!?! Can I speak to your manager” so the other SSV comes and repeats to her the same thing, but we just gave up saying next time you need your id and only did the partner discount since we saw it going nowhere and we had 6 cars red at that point.
_coffees7 points2y ago
I would urge you not to give up in this situation. People often use this tactic of getting upset/intimidation to scare you into giving them what they want. I’m sorry but your SSV should have stood their ground because now this person is likely empowered to repeat this at another store and say “well the other Starbucks let me do it” I’ve heard this phrase countless times sadly.
Cuttis3 points2y ago
Yes! That is classic scammer behavior. They try to escalate a situation so you’ll be intimidated and uncomfortable and just give in so they’ll go away. People in my area would come into the store and claim that all four of their Frappuccinos were wrong and demand a cash refund with no receipt. I had it happen to me and the guy belittled me, using my name pointedly several times, and threatened my job (“you like working here, (my name)? ). He also pulled out his phone and pretended to be dialing corporate. To get him out of my store I loaded two recovery cards and then switched them out for two empty ones before I handed them to him. Suck it.
GymLeaderFlame2 points2y ago
It is what it is I wasn’t the shift on duty and I have a week left at this point so in hindsight I should’ve stood my ground but can’t do anything now
