What is it with Starbucks hiring minors left and right now? Surely there are plenty of qualified adults applying, most of whom probably need the pay and benefits very much. When I was hired in 2016 most baristas were in their mid-20s or older, lots of moms. It feels like bux is snapping up teenagers because they will work for less money and not use the insurance or other benefits, as well as not being experienced enough to recognize the BS much less stand up to it. I also don't think it is responsible at all for companies to be having minors work jobs that expose them to a lot of public contact right now. AITA?

You’re absolutely right.
Fuck this company.

I honestly think it’s because they can get away with scheduling them minimal hours because of “laws”, and are therefore less likely to use benefits beyond Spotify so Starbucks doesn’t have to pay premiums for them.
I also think Starbucks as a company has moved from catering to an older customer base (coffee and espresso based drinks) to a younger one (frappuccinos and refreshers) and wants to reflect that in stores.

I’m transfering to a brand new store in my district and my new manager told me that all the new baristas are high schoolers...she was like “I mean were good now but once covid is over and schools open again I’m kinda fucked cause we won’t have a morning crew” 🙃

My manager has been constantly hiring minors..most of them this is their first job for them. And I can often tell its their first before they tell me. 🙄
We got a new girl and she seems really nice and bubbly personality. But I watched her mop. She basically held it in her hands and walked it across the floor. 🤦♂️

Yeah kids need to learn, and there are attitude issues, but the crux of my issue with it is that most of these hires are for very short term employment, few stay more than a year, and that it's taking away hours from experienced partners who want more hours. At my last store the manager hired 4 minors in a month, only one of whom was independent after a month, and my hours and those of a 13(!) year partner were cut down to under 20/week, to the point where I had to hunt for shifts at other stores just to keep my benefits. Now the manager at my current store also hired several minors, I know for a fact most of the established partners want more hours, my availability is set to fully open but I'm barely getting 20 here. This is wrong!
Critical504 points2y ago
That is wrong.
I think store managers do this more often now because they arent on the floor as much. So, they dont have to deal with it upfront like we do. They dont have to train them, work with them, help them, etc.
My first job I got bitched at if they saw me doing nothing. I learned how to take initiative because of that. But at Starbucks, nah. These kids could do the worst job ever and my shift will tell them they did a great job when they're leaving.

So I'm 16 and I started working at Starbucks not even 2 months after my 16th birthday and I was actually thinking about this the other day.
*To my knowledge*, I'm not treated any differently besides the fact that I can't work more than 8 hours in a day. I went through the interview, I got hired, and I started working like everybody else. I was expected to memorize all the information I got and I did, like everyone else. I cover shifts when I'm asked to and I go straight from school to work (before covid).
I get where adults are coming from when they say we're lazy and we don't do enough and we shouldn't have this job because other people need it more but teenagers are expected to have jobs and we get so much hate and so much "When I was your age, I had a job, kids these days are so lazy" that we're almost forced into it. Just keep in mind, when we get a job, people say we're "stealing jobs away from people who need them more" and when we don't get a job, we're "lazy and protected and sheltered and won't make it in the real world". We literally can't win.
I'm sorry you guys in the comments are getting all these teens who aren't doing their job but I swear, not all teenagers are like that. I got this job two years before I go off to college so I can continue working through college and have enough money to support myself, hopefully with a scholarship. I take my job so seriously and I even tell my friends to not be childish when they come in. Even when I go in to get a drink with my friends on my days off, I act with the most professionalism when I'm around my co-workers.
I am the only 16 year old in my store. Everyone else is over 21 I believe. In the 8 months I've had this job, I've learned so much about working with adults and I'm much more prepared for future jobs after college. I've gotten praise and I've gotten criticism (constructive and destructive) and even though I don't always love it, I'm beyond thankful for this job.
I would also like to apologize on behalf of every teenager who works at Starbucks for all of these bad experiences I'm seeing. I promise that's not all of us and it's not an age thing. It's a personality thing. I say this because there are several adults who work in my store who are constantly moving slowly, out of dress code, and stealing. My shift lead actually cussed me out one time and a partner came up to me and said "Hey, can you just be super nice to him? He's having a bad day" and I know for a fact, if I did that, I'd be fired on the spot.
I'm sorry this post was long, I had more to say than I realized. Y'all have a great day. (And feel free to respond)

As mentioned: my primary issue is not with the quality of work from minors, it's about sneaky policy shit that is letting large corporations avoid paying adults a living wage.
thisisscrump1 points2y ago
Yeah, that sucks, sorry you guys have to deal with that
colonade173 points2y ago
My store just hired a minor, and it's been a disaster. She can only work 4 hour shifts. Because this is her first job ever she literally lacks the most basic job readiness skills. I feel like the job of my SSV team isn't just to train her to be able to do this job, but to be able to survive as a human being without her parents doing everything for her.
and because of her availability she has no hope meeting benefits eligibility (maybe they know this and are trying to cut costs)
ilikebigavocados6662 points2y ago
they are desperate. us elders ( mid 20's) are realizing left and right how fucked this company is & quitting
hufflepuffisonfleek2 points2y ago
My SM will not hire minors, he wants everyone who works at our store to be 18+ it’s too much work because of the time constraints and other things. I wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t even bother interviewing them.
moonbean372 points2y ago
it’s not their fault that the company wants to find easy targets to overwork and underpay. but what are we lowly baristas to do about it 🤷🏻♀️
Narthithuth [OP]2 points2y ago
I don't blame minors for working, though I admit i don't agree with their parents allowing it.
dejectedeyebrow1 points2y ago
we do be gettin hired for more work and less pay B))) im 17 and my manager at the cafe i worked at (i transferred to dt because of covid) was a piece of shit to me cause she didnt hire me and thought i was incompetent bUt iM dOiNg My BeSt
Alliiicatttt1 points2y ago
The work ethic between minors and an adult(19/20+) is so different. And it makes me so upset. Minors are rude, they don’t care about the job, they call out..... i know there are some unicorns out there that don’t, so kudos to them, but more often than not it’s not the case. Put a happy face on at work and hate your job any other time. Lol
Blackout621 points2y ago
Oh no, they'll get my millennial references even less than the college age baristas. If I can't go on a 90 minute digression about Tony Hawk with my coworkers then what's the point of any of this?
