Impossible sandwiches (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by [deleted]
How do y’all feel about the impossible sandwiches not having the option to be vegan at all?? Do you tell customers???

I had a girl come in the other day and she wanted her impossible sandwich with no cheese or egg, and she got her drink with non-dairy milk, so clearly she was vegan. I wanted to tell her that the bread it comes on has butter on it, but my SM was right next to me and she always gets pissy when I clarify to customers about their order, (do you still want whip on that, etc) even if it’s not during a rush. I have had a few other customers who also want the sandwich “vegan”.

Same with the rest of our sandwiches. We have plenty of customers who want the cheese taken off their sandwiches because they don’t want the dairy, but all the egg patties are made with milk. The bacon Gouda even has parm in the egg.

Obvi for people who order the impossible sandwich as-is, it’s no problem, but I always get worried about not being able to clarify to the clearly vegan customers. Should I tell them??? Should I leave it up to them to do the research themselves? I mean the ingredients are on our website, so it’s not hard, but still idk!!!! I used to be vegan myself, and there were plenty of times I’ve ordered something and then one day an employee tells me it’s not vegan and I feel really sick and gross because I didn’t know.

It sucks that your manager doesn’t like you asking clarifying questions. We push that at my store and encourage baristas to ask those questions.

That being said, it is the customer’s responsibility to know whether or not a food item or beverage is within the limitations of their diet (be it chosen or an allergy).

Starbucks makes it clear that all the drinks are made in the same blender/shaker/steaming pitcher, food in the same oven and there’s no promise that anything is truly vegan or allergy free. We can’t know all the in-depth ingredients to every single item on the menu or be expected to guess a customers dietary restrictions and accommodate that.

It really bothers me that my store doesn’t push that. Like if a customer orders a mocha with almond milk and I ask if they still want whip, my sm always gets pissy, even when half the time the customer is usually like “oh! no whip please” after I bring it up. I’m saving time by not having to take the drink back, so I don’t know why it’s such an issue.

What? It’s standard for us to ask at POS is the customer wants whip to save the bar people time. That’s insane.

Actually unfortunately the Starbucks standard is to not ask ANY questions. We’re supposed to just type in exactly what the customer requested without any questions.

Thankfully I work at a cafe only store, so we aren’t timed and can get away with asking questions. Obviously it saves more time to ask questions than to ring up the customer “wrong” because they wanted iced and didn’t specify.

Fuck your manager.

Always tell people what's in their food if it's clear that they're avoiding something. It's morally right. I will tell people ALL the time "just so you know, there is regular vanilla syrup in the sweet cream", "just so you know, that has green coffee extract in it so it is caffeinated", "just so you know, that can't be made vegan" or ask if they still want whip on their almond milk fraps.

Blah blah, "it's up to the consumer" blah blah "it's not our responsibility" blah. What does your moral compass say to do? Do that.

I think if someone told me they wanted something vegan, I would tell them that even if I took the egg and cheese off it still wouldn’t be certified vegan.

Like with gluten free stuff. Technically the egg bites are gluten free but I’m not going to tell a customer that because they aren’t certified gluten free.

I don’t think you should be expected to clarify but it’s definitely a nice thing to do if you can. I wish Starbucks had at least one vegan option.

Some of the bagels should be vegan, if not all of them

You’re right, I guess I was thinking solely about the hot breakfast sandwiches and wraps! I’m a vegetarian and I love the southwest veggie wrap but there aren’t any vegan options on that side of the menu.

I️ dont even think the bread is vegan tho? It’s probably made with eggs (most commercially sold bread is.)

Yeah it has butter on it too!! so that’s why it’s not able to be made vegan even if you take the egg and cheese out!!
