Just got hired, I start on Monday! (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Becquerell
Hi everyone! I just finished the hiring process and am officially a Starbucks partner. My first training shift is Monday, and I was wondering if anyone might have some advice for me? Tips, tricks, or things to know? Sorry if this is a common question!

I’m 22, in college (online) and will be working at a dine-in store with a drive-thru (though our dining room is closed due to covid at the moment) in the Northwest. My last two jobs involved barista duties, but mostly I made smoothies and cold blended coffees, so I kind of feel like I’m going in blind, haha.

I do really enjoy being a barista, and I love Starbucks coffee, so while I’m excited I’m also definitely a bit nervous. My SM seems really great, we get along really well, and I’m hoping my coworkers are cool too. I know for many of you that have worked at sbux for awhile my excitement is probably tiring/annoying, and I’m sure I’ll form that mindset eventually too haha, I just want to be as prepared as possible! :)

244\*\*\*\* here! I've been a partner for 3 years now, this was my first job, and I've moved up in the SBUX world into opening a new store as a shift manager! I trained every single person who opened the store with me, we had a crew of over 15 people who were brand new, and for many of them this is their first job.

My best advice is, first off, just know that you are going to feel like you're not getting it. With all of the drinks we have, no one is expecting you to memorize everything right away. For me, Starbucks clicked about 2-3 months in.

Second, ask questions! If you're not understanding something, or feel unsure, it's better to ask than to learn the wrong thing.

Third, SEQUENCING. Practice beverage sequencing RIGHT off the bat and bar will come easier to you.

Fourth, if you EVER have any questions on standards even after you've completed training, look on the partner hub or recipe cards for resources!

Fifth, throw yourself into the fire when you're about 80% sure of what you're doing.

Good luck !

I just started working at Starbucks also! Today was my third day. If there’s anything I’ve taken from my training these past few days, it’s to ASK QUESTIONS. No matter how stupid or repetitive or annoying you may think it is, ask. And wear super comfy shoes because your feet and back will thank you later. You’ll also smell like coffee after every shift, I’ve noticed, but honestly just pay close attention to the recipes/drinks because it’s a lot. Keeping your stress under control helps too, since you’re not panicking that you can’t make a venti caramel macchiato with soy milk and extra caramel sauce extra hot with 2 extra shots and god knows what else they want - since my store (it’s probably different from yours) cares more about the quality and accuracy of the drinks and food, over getting it out in an unreasonable time frame. It’s really not horrible, I think it’s overwhelming at first but once you get used to the environment it’s not so bad.
