Why do so many districts start pay at minimum wage plus 2 cents? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Nuhbudyknows
Is this just them paying us 2 extra cents per hour so they can say they technically pay above minimum wage? Or is there another reason? Im in a store in CA in the US, and have heard other stories like this within the US but no explanation

I would assume the worst and say, yes it's so they can say they pay above minimum wage. I forget which companies did this, but one fast food chain raised their wage, and another company, as some sort of cruel joke, raised their pay by one cent, as a way of competing with them. So yeah, I would say it's safe to assume.

Wow you get two extra cents? We just got minimum here

Lol I actually think this may be part of the intent. Pit baristas against each other over literal crumbs — like, “50 hours makes you one extra dollar”-level crumbs. But srs, min here is $15 because the cost of living is crazy high so the .02 has had literally no effect the whole time I’ve worked for the company

It has a side benefit: not sure about all states, but in some states you are denied the right to file complaints with the state labor commission for minimum wage work.

THIS is what I was looking for! Makes sense! I felt it had to be related to some kind of legal subversion especially with how sbux has squandered every past attempt to unionize baristas

In my experience this helps the barista, for example, if they are complaining about a store-level issue such as a manager not paying back hours, etc.
