Would I be wrong for asking not to work DT? (self.starbucksbaristas)

So my store is a fairly high volume store in a college town (approx. 20,000 students plus a town population of 50,000). The college is known for partying and that has caused some issues around the community. Move-in has been happening throughout the course of the week and we’ve been taking extra precautions. We’ve pretty much had the lobby closed and mobile orders off all week because it’s been so busy and there’s no way to have effective social distancing in our lobby. On Thursday, our store made it a policy that customers have to wear masks through the drive thru as well (we still serve them if they don’t have them, but they have to pay with card and we leave the window closed, put their drink on the ledge and they take it). I’m really bad at confrontation, and I’m on DTO/full drive a lot, especially during peak. Every time I ask someone if they have a mask at the box, I’m getting prepared to be yelled at, and it’s really stressing me out. To be fair, like 95% of customers are fine with the rule, but the 5% that arent, as expected, are causing a hassle. I worked open until 11 today and I work the same shift tomorrow. I want to ask my SSV if I can do something other than drive, but I don’t want to sound like a complainer; especially since I agree with the mask rule (I’m just bad at enforcing it), and the majority of morning partners are stronger than me on bar. Do y’all think there’s anything wrong with me asking to be in a different position, at least during peak?

Please ask your SSV to be somewhere else. They need to be rotating partners every 2 hours anyways so no partner is stuck in the same position the entire shift. And it’s always good to communicate with your SSV about your needs and preferences. On top of that, you will never get better at bar if you are never there. Just let your SSV know that you spent the entire day on DT the day before and would like to be somewhere else.

As an SSV I always start my day by asking where my baristas would like to be and where they would prefer to not be. One of the things I tried to do when I first got promoted was to find out where everyone preferred to be. For example, I have some partners who prefer to not be on bar at all and would prefer DTO/DTR or warming/front reg. Most of my “stronger” partners like “high intensity” positions like DT bar or cafe bar. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with asking to be put somewhere else. I want all my partners happy and try to accommodate them to the best of my abilities! I say go for it and ask. Your SSV won’t know your concerns unless you communicate them. A good supervisor will be happy to help!
