To the Starbucks store that successfully unionized in Victoria, BC, Canada (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by StumpTrump
>
In a statement, one unnamed Starbucks worker, said the staff were sick of “being paid minimum wage to work for a multibillion-dollar company, being understaffed during a global pandemic, and we don’t like decisions that directly affect our safety being made without us."

I couldn't have put it better myself. 👏👏

Question, would them having a successful union impact the company as a whole, or just their location?
piratedashel 37 points 2y ago
Asking because I honestly don’t know: couldn’t they just shut the whole store down and wash their hands of it?

Yes and no. Canadian laws are a bit more favourable to employees, Walmart got into trouble for closing stores after being unionized. I'd expect Starbucks to take a very strong position over this, I can imagine the store suddenly being deemed unprofitable and it being closed. If word spreads that it's unionized across Canada and the US, it could cause a wave of similar events. It might cost the company a fair bit to fight it out, but it'll buy them time (and fear).

Its slightly harder to do that in Canada in general, and harder again in British Columbia.

It means anti-union efforts from Starbucks will increase, but a store can join their union and increase its size (and therefore strength/longevity).

The ideal method of unionizing is an entire area at once. The next best is a strong unified team unionizing a store and then folding in other stores quickly.

I hope they will. I'm pushing for unionizing along side them in my area of Canada as speak. Fingers crossed, but we need to take this shit seriously and join in the struggle.

Definitely impacting the company as a whole. All DMs were instructed to have meetings with their teams to get to the bottom of why people are unhappy and what they want in. They don’t want more people to unionize. My DM is great and she really wants to work with the partners to help us out. Can’t say much for others.

I had one of those meetings yesterday. I appreciated hearing the other partners in our district having the same issues as our store. I didn’t appreciate our DM saying he can’t promise more labour when that was the ask from all four of us when we spoke. It seemed reasonable to us! Of course, the customer connection was dangled above our heads instead.

Dont peddle this shit.

I've been with starbucks for four years, I've given them so much energy, and my mental and PHYSICAL health.

They don't care about us. They always claim they care about what we want, but never give us what we want. Fuck em. We need to take what we are owed, because they won't give it to us. Never have, never will.

I dont understand how "trying to understand" is in any way good or uplifting? They always push this line. Always. And what has come from it? We always tell them the same thing too: better wages, better benefits, more labour, and recently with covid, better sick leave and safer conditions. They don't care, they still always do the bare minimum to make them seem like the less evil company out of all the other evil companies. That's where the bar is. Ants can't even make it under it its so low.

They joined the steelworker's union precisely to have more leverage and bodies to back them up in case of direct action.

I think this is hopeful for us.

Anyone in Canada anywhere, $1 and start getting info about unionizing in your province from them.

I called on friday so I should get a call back on moday from an activism rep from my local branch and am hoping to get in contact with an organizer at the Victoria BC store.

Americans... well good luck....

The biggest impact would be just on that location. The next phase is for the workers to enter into an agreement with starbucks where they negotiate their demands.

Starbucks may try to limit changes just to that one store, but they may also change things elsewhere to try to avoid other stores or districts from unionizing.
