Becoming a barista? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by trickster-vick
So right now I work part time at Walmart and there are zero benefits unless you stay for a while year, you HAVE to work black Friday, managers are assholes in fact I got sexually harassed by the assistant manager of the store and he still works there! I can't stand working there anymore because customers are terrible, invade personal space, eat and drink things and leave the trash on the shelves and I can't do it anymore. I wanted to know is it worth making the switch and working at Starbucks as a barista? Or is it also hellish? Are the benefits worth it? And is learning how to make all the drinks as hard as my little anxious brain thinks? Please help!

Hi welcome! Please don’t let the majority of negative posts on here dissuade you. If you are interested in benefits Starbucks is absolutely the best place to work. Full benefits for part time employees (20hrs a week) and you’re typically eligible after third month of employment. Full health, dental, vision will run you about $60 a check and with deductible around $700. You also get 20 free therapy sessions a year (can start using day 1), 401k, stock options, college tuition reimbursement through ASU. You start earning sick pay day one.

The hourly isn’t great but the benefits more than make up for it and the hourly might even be a bit better than at Walmart. Starbucks is a great place to work focused on mental health and community. There is a lot of drinks to learn to be sure but no one expects you to know it all day one or even month three. You should have a good experience training and after training every partner is available as a resource to answer questions. My advice to new baristas about the hardest part of learning the job is be easy and patient with yourself. You’ll get it in time, don’t get overwhelmed.
