Is homework an excuse to call out?(self.starbucksbaristas)

I know it’s not really. But I’m an Asu student, and my manager is week after week messing up my days off more and more. And just keeps saying next week will be better. At this point the next schedule she writes will be close to the end of class, so in the coming weeks I’m wondering how I will find the time.

Are you being scheduled outside of your posted availability?

Yes

It’s seems this situation is pretty messed up for a company to offer tuition to ASU and then not give them the schedule the requested in order to be successful at work and school. I am forced to make sacrifices in my education for Starbucks. That’s like having health insurance but you can’t use your benefits because you have to work.

Find coverage. You cant call out and expect the shift to cover for you, even if its just being late.
If your manager is scheduling you outside your availability, then its different. You have to let the manager know asap that they made a mistake and you cannot make that shift, then if it isnt resolved, contact the DM and PCC.

My manager is well aware of my availability and just keeps saying she’ll do it next week. I am scared to contact my dm, last few times I just tried to ask her a question she nearly bit my head off. During the first recall they tried to send me to a 24 hour store to work graveyard! And when I asked her about it later she said they bent over backwards trying to get me that spot because they thought that would be a good match for me. She added id be luck to be offered something so nice. But I ended up back at my store. And now all this is happening. Last time I called pcc they just kept telling me to talk to my dm.

Ok so its out of your availability. Thats different obviously. So your next step is one of 2 options: 1. Tell your SM point blank that you cannot and will not show up to shifts out of your availability. When one pops up, tell them they did it again and that you are not coming under any circumstances. They will net be able to write you up and have it stick if your availability is approved. 2. Try and talk to your DM. It may be hard and not go well but at least someone else will know whats happening and you will have a record of having tried to resolve it.
Either way, you NEED to call ethics and compliance. PCC is a department of sbux and is there to support them. Ethics and Compliance is an outside company hired by sbux to protect us. Tell them what is happening every step of the way, before you refuse to show up for shifts, once you did it, once your manager approaches you about it etc. They can advise you as to the best thing to do, and can back you up if they try to write you up
