the non-mask wearing assholes (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by doggomom1313
So, I’ve been with Starbucks for 4 years, and I’ve been a SSV for almost 2 years now. Things have gotten so much worse lately with COVID19 and how people act. Customer connections are being pushed constantly from our DM even though most of us at my store are SO friendly to customers & get to know them really well. I’m so tired of bending over backwards for customers that continue to treat us like shit. We just have to roll over & take it.

At my store (and I think all starbucks stores are enforcing this), anyone who enters the store has to be wearing a mask unless they are sitting at their table or whatever. As a SSV, I am required to enforce this policy, and I make sure that my baristas don’t have to deal with telling people that they need to wear a mask.

So, I was the closing shift tonight, and we had just recovered from our afternoon rush with 3 partners. A man came in (not wearing a mask) and I asked him how he was doing & took his order. While his card was processing, I politely asked him, “Do you have a mask, sir?” And he aggressively snapped, “For what?” And he was fucking rolling his eyes at me. And I pointed to the huge sign on the plexi glass right in front of his face that it’s Starbucks policy to wear masks in the store. And he snapped back, “i have a medical condition exemption.” And I just said okay. I rushed to get his food & drink ready, hoping that he would leave after he had his stuff. But noooooooo this man sat in the corner for almost two hours & stared at us. If you have a medial condition that prevents you from wearing a mask, why are you sitting in my goddamn cafe for 2 hours?
I was just so mad because I can usually take people’s bullshit, but I’m so over being talked to like I’m a piece of crap. I was just trying to do my fucking job. I told my manager what happened, and she was super supportive and great about it. I was on the verge of tears because his tone & aggression just really got to me.

I’m just so over Starbucks pushing customer connection & bending over backwards to “make the moment right” when customers can just treat us like shit & talk down to us. I honestly have been wanting to walk out for weeks now. I wish starbucks would pay us what we deserve especially since they ask SO much of us.

Sorry for the lengthy post. I just had to rant to you guys because I know someone out there understands how I feel.

Okay, I’m sorry, I really don’t understand the “medical condition” thing. If you’re that unwell, then don’t come in. You’re putting an entire store at risk because YOU, one single person in a full room, need accommodation during this global pandemic. I, as a new shift, want to quit over just this specifically. I have 2 jobs & at my second job I am yet to have a single person give me the “medical condition” bullshit but I get it every damn day at Starbucks and it makes me feel unsafe! I just don’t get it

Those of us with asthma and/or respiratory issues have to be really careful when wearing a mask BUT I don’t think it’s an excuse to not wear one while in a shop. While pregnant I couldn’t wear one at all due to my asthma plus shortness of breath from lugging my giant kiddo around 😂 so I tried to limit going out as much as possible (sometimes it was unavoidable). But, going IN to Starbucks is NOT a necessity and so I TOTALLY agree with you - if someone has a medical condition preventing them from wearing a mask, then walking IN to ANY shop is just selfish.

Like if anything can starbucks give us some face shields to offer these people? I’m so over people screaming at me over this like I really don’t want to sound awful but I feel these people are just causing more problems like, we have a person who said they have a condition when we explained the new mandatory starbucks mask rule but the next day came in with a face shield so like????? It’s not hard dude... I’ll buy them one but people are not even trying to mobile order, being patient with waiting outside, nothing

It’s so ridiculous. People think they’re “above the rules.” And I’m so fucking over it. At first, people were really understanding, but it’s gotten so much worse over the last couple of weeks. I have to ask several customers every single day if they have a mask... it’s just exhausting
doggomom1313 [OP] 2 points 2y ago
They could easily go through the drive thru instead of coming in! I just don’t understand people, and I hate that people lie & use rush excuse when there’s people that legitimately have a medical condition
doggomom1313 [OP] 1 points 2y ago
It’s so ridiculous!!!! I hate that people use that excuse when they’re just lying so that they don’t have to wear a mask. I feel unsafe, too, and I wish that people actually cared about others

they are assholes. usually i try to lead without giving them an option “did you have a mask or do you need to borrow one?” and people still find ways to be abrasive jerks. way i look at it, i can try once, and if people decide to be belligerent and anti-mask we don’t get paid enough to put ourselves in such an awkward and uncomfortable situation. can’t wait till all of this is over ☹️

I wish I could have asked the man to leave lol but yeah I always approach the customers calmly & with respect. But then I get a rude, defensive excuse for doing my job lol

as a barista, i always watch the door to see if someones walked in the store, usually to greet them, and if they dont have a mask on i call them out. idc. very straightforward

“Do You Have A Mask?”

that usually startles them and theyre like oh shit i forgot! brb! and if they dont have 1 i just say oh good i have one for you:)

we dont have seating open at my cafe so its really just in and out for everyone and if u cant wear mask/cover your face for 1 minute while youre in here then youre gonna get called out
doggomom1313 [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Most people are understanding, and I give them a mask or they do get theirs that they forgot. I’m just over the people that won’t comply with the rules

I was at a juice cafe, same signs on the door. They had plexiglass over everything except on the end, but it was blocked off by chairs. This asshole comes in without his mask, orders, then pushes the chairs out of the way and stands there with his arms crossed, where there wasn't plexiglass. You could tell all the workers were uncomfortable. They have curbside available, which I personally still wear a mask for, but it would be better for everyone else's sake, which makes me think these people do this shit on purpose. They love to push boundaries and make people feel uncomfortable.
doggomom1313 [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Oh, people TOTALLY do it on purpose... it’s ridiculous. I have people do that all the time. Purposefully standing where that isn’t plexiglass. I don’t get how people can be so selfish
RoaringDragonite 3 points 2y ago
What also gets me is the people who have masks but don’t wear them. Like okay. I understand sometimes people forget

BUT THEN THERE ARE THOSE PEOPLE WHO WAIT TO ENTER THE STORE AND THEN STAND IN THE DOORWAY TO PUT THEIR MASK ON. Take two seconds and do that outside. Literally not IN the doorway where there is the most foot traffic.
doggomom1313 [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Ugh, I hate that! People do that all the time at my store... it’s so easy to just wait outside & put it on 🤦‍♀️🙄

My sister was given this excuse at her store: "I don't need to wear a mask because I already had it so I'm immune!"

I told her if I EVER hear someone say that in public, I'm going to walk towards them while preparing to lift my mask and say, "oh perfect, because I just got positive results back and I can barely breathe with this mask on!!"

I’m a 4 year partner and I’ve been applying for a new job all week. I’m so over everything and now we have a schedule of when we can do things on the floor like make lemonade backups and cbic. And this mask issue isn’t making it any easier
doggomom1313 [OP] 1 points 2y ago
It’s just so exhausting, and I feel like we have no support from the company itself regarding the mask issue. I’m so sorry it’s been rough for you, too. It’s been hell for my store with lack of coverage & customers getting away with their shitty behavior. I’m just so done
JCaligirl420 2 points 2y ago
I’m sorry it’s been rough for you too. I don’t feel supported by the company or my manager and that makes me sad. Like I was working on promoting but now I don’t want to because I’m tired, I don’t want to be micromanaged like they are doing now, telling us when we can make lemonade now and shit is too much. The customers getting away with murder is too much. Hang in there, I hope everything works out for you.
