Target Starbucks (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by gjroberts93
Hey,

I currently work at a regular Starbucks but one of the local Targets is hiring specifically for baristas, and it would be a $5+ per hour raise for me, plus more hours likely.

Anyone have experience working at both a regular and Target Starbucks at the same time? I want to stick with regular Starbucks to hold on to my benefits at least.

Thanks for any input!

My time to shine!

In all honesty, it all depends on the management of each store.

Tarbux Pros:
1) more money and usually more hours.
2) 10% target discount and an additional 20% off fruits/veggies and most target brand foods and healthcare items.
3) No drive thru
4) Usually more lenient rules
5) In my experience, chiller workers
6) Reduced fare buss pass or super cheap one time payment for a parking pass.
7) Option to cross-train in other areas during slow seasons to pick up hours.
8) You have Security people to kick out crazies.

Tarbux Cons:
1) Target management doesn’t give a damn about Starbucks. It can be a blessing and a curse.
2) Often less coverage, but can be store dependent.
3) No Starbucks benefits (ASU/free food and drink/insurance)
4) Registers are different and not as intuitive. Also you have to write on cups and learn the drink codes.
5) There’s no rule against working alone. If it’s a bad store, you might be working some shifts alone due to callouts or hour cuts.
6) Dumb people will ask you about Target questions.
7) Usually lacks structure because there are no shift supervisors. There’s only the Team Lead and the employees. You have to self-govern.
8) You can’t pick up shifts at other stores.

If I had to go back to Starbucks, I’d personally choose Target because of the higher pay and more option for hours. For me, it was a looser environment. It definitely all depends on the team though.

The good thing is that whichever you choose, you could always switch to the other. And given that you would have experience, any store would gladly pick you up.

Okay! My plan is actually to keep working at my normal Starbucks for enough hours to maintain my insurance (and get all the other benefits) and give Target the rest of my availability at the higher pay rate.
