Not to be “that guy”, but... don’t. Not worth it.

Is it really much different from being a barista? I'm not trying to say I have career goals with starbucks but I'm trying to make and save as much as possible right now and a promotion is a good way to do that, rather than a second job. What would I really be sacrificing by doing this, if I'm already a 40 hour a week barista?

I mean it’s a personal choice. You can directly impact how the shift is run as the key holder. I was a barista for a loooong time before becoming a shift and only did so because I was tired of the awful shifts being run at the store I transferred to.
If you hate confrontation or you don’t feel you have the skills to communicate the needs of the day then don’t do it because the job requires it. You’re probably never going to win POTQ as a shift because for the most part people don’t like being held to a standard.

Can you go over that last part? Why exactly wouldn't I get a potq.

Because you’re going to be correcting a lot. Hey can you grab a name tag? Hey remember this gets the powder topping. Remember we steam kids drinks at a lower temperature so we don’t burn them. Hey when I send you on that 10 it wasn’t secret code for a 20 etc etc. you’ll see the longer you’re a shift, there’s the ones that are good and try to keep a standard and then there’s the ones who shouldn’t be shifts that just let everything go.

As far as the money, it’s not as low as people say it is. I’ve been a shift for almost a year and it went up over $6 sooo.... and not I didn’t ask for a raise. As a barista you’re held to certain standards. Same as a shift, just different standards. I particularly like delegating and making plans to make the shift run great. I can literally talk about how much I love being a shift all day. But I think it honestly comes down to your personality and your stores vibes. My store is a close family kind. I feel supported on and off the clock.
