Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

I used to love my job. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by RareLingonberry
I used to love working at Starbucks. I love all my coworkers, our store, I loved the job itself. Everyday I was happy to come into work and see my partners and our regulars. After we reopened everyone felt safe and happy to be back while we ran drive thru only. Then we reopened the cafe for grab and go and there were almost no safety measures until we complained and demanded changes. Then we reopened the cafe for limited seating and started letting people order inside. Despite constantly being between 10-30% over our sales goals our hours were cut and there we could no longer follow standard cleaning protocols let alone the new ones introduced after covid. We can hardly clean anything all day, we can’t limit the number of people in the cafe, we can barely keep up with orders and forget anything even getting wiped down most days until later in the day. Partners are crying on the floor or having panic attacks or calling off to try to preserve any shred of mental health they have left because running with a full cafe and drive thru line out to the road is overwhelming for less than a full staff and no one cares. The company tells us how much they appreciate us while they do nothing to indicate that that is true. Everyone who used to love coming into work absolutely hates their job now. Every one of us HATES being there. It is the worst part of all of our days and borrowed partners are shocked to see how bad our store gets and never pick up a shift at our location again. We are constantly understaffed, but our partners are sent to other stores to help out when we desperately need every person. It’s not uncommon to only have 3 people on the floor to take orders at drive and cafe, run ovens, make drinks, clean, do dishes, make back ups, and “take time to make connections”. The third place no longer includes partners, but the company keeps telling us to be nice to all the shitty rude customers so that they still have a third place experience while they yell at us for their 17 Frappuccino order taking too long when there are 40 customers ahead of them and they can see one of us literally running from one end of the store to the other the entire time just to take all the orders. We have a partner about to hit their 10 year who is days away from quitting because the last few months have shown us how little we matter. All of our shifts want to step down or quit. We just promoted a new shift and they made him cry on his first day because it was so stressful. We have seating available inside now that is no more than maybe 3-4ft apart where you can fit a total of 12 people in close proximity with no masks. The company keeps claiming they care about us, but all of our cries for help don’t reach them and our SM refuses to believe how bad the store gets everyday because they are never there to see it. We all hate our jobs now. But oh boy we got 150 stars to add to our apps.

You’re not the only one. This is my store too. We had a great environment and I LOVED working there. Now, all the good partners are quitting because we’re overworked, underpaid, and unprotected. I want to quit but haven’t been able to get another job and I’ve stopped applying because I know a lot of people are out of jobs and I should feel lucky that at least I have one? So I keep hoping things at starbucks get better or at least go back to normal where at least I can be happy there. But remember that even if the company doesn’t have our backs, your coworkers do. I’ve been making a bigger effort to come into shifts with my old energy and positivity for my coworkers and I think sometimes it helps, and it helps me too. And it’s okay if customers have to wait a little longer for their 17 frappuccinos.

this is horrible. i can’t believe this. your sm is seriously never there? no wonder everything is falling apart. you need an sm that will be proactive in hiring the help you need and building a team that can support each other through rushes like this.

at my store, we freak when we have less than f i ve people on staff during peak. i cannot even begin to imagine the stress of having only 3. especially since pumpkin just launched. it’s the beginning of the holiday rush and it’s only going to get busier from this point on.

is there anyone other than your sm that you can talk to? your dm maybe? because if this isn’t fixed asap, starbucks is going to lose a bunch of really amazing partners because no one was there to help them when they really needed it.

at my store, we have a solid team that loves and supports each other. we look forward to seeing each other every day. that’s something i want for every. single. store.

You aren’t alone. I’ve been with the company for 2 years and worked at the same store since I’ve gotten hired. Seen 3 SMs come and go and nothing has changed if not gotten worse. Morning staff is prioritized in our SM eyes and night crew is just left to work with the scraps we are handed . Our SM literally just sits on his computer while we are constantly understaffed and working passed our max capacity and then after an hr will tell us have a good close in mid peak and leave. I’ve just become a barista trainer 3 weeks ago and he has me training every week and I don’t remember when my last day off was. I’m so burnt out and can’t wait till I can get in a position to quit.

This sounds exactly like how my store was, and that’s why I couldn’t take it anymore and quit. It was a hard decision but it got to the point where it just felt completely dehumanizing, all around me the co workers i cared about were having mental breakdowns left and right, and every shift I had was sooo exhausting and it was always nonstop fast paced work. To top it all off, my store manager had the nerve to pull me aside and tell me i needed to be working harder. My only regret is that I didn’t quit sooner.

Was this a thing? That’s like the least important part of this post but I’m still curious.

All partners are supposed to get 150 stars "for all our hard work!" Instead of anything else we asked for 🙄

I’m with you! I loved working for Starbucks right off the bat and it’s been a great company to work for up until we came back from quarantine.

I work in a cafe store and thank goodness my SM has our backs on enforcing masks, no seating and no going over capacity.

That being said, we’re extremely overworked with no chances to get anything cleaned most days - and still expected to get out within 30min of closing. We’re “technically” fully staffed, but if one person calls out we’re down a person (so usually 2 people instead of 3) and SOL because almost everyone works every single day and everyone is so exhausted they refuse to come in on their rare day off.

I don’t know how much longer I can do this. I miss the job how it was when I started and I hate all the stress and pressure that’s on us now.

Edit: btw how do we get the 150 stars? My partner card and numbers are on my app and i definitely did not get 150 stars.

They were supposed to send physical card with a QR code to be handed out to partners at their stores.
