I’m a shift. Got hired on as one. I have 6-8 years of hospitality experience. Been management at a bunch of other places. Long story short I ended up at Starbucks.

Holy fuck. The amount of work that is expected from shifts and baristas for the pay is fucking just bat shit nuts. In ‘Real World’ hospitality the duties of a shift would have been divided by 4-6 people depending.

Purchasing and Stock Manager.
Food Prep.
Cook.
Cashier.
Janitorial.
FOH manager.

Like fuck me. And my training was by far adequate as my SM has been an SM for like 13+ years now. Kind of out of touch with how the real world works.

It’s honestly so horrible that I’ve been looking at jobs and even debated about going back into the military. Cause at least if I get fucked in the military I got a place to sleep for free and fed decent meals.

And the hours. How am I suppose to live off 15-25 hours a week. Trying to thin out the shifts so she doesn’t have to man the floor. And no one fucking blames you. We don’t even want you on the floor. I was told by my DM to try looking for hours at other stores. Imma not do 4-6 hours at one store and basically have my lunch driving to another store to do another 4-6 hours.

The labor and short staffing leaving me and a barista alone for happy hour. Two people in a cafe store in a rich neighborhood next to a high school and middle school.

And I’m not even at a year yet.

I am just so tired of the low pay, high labor expectations from minimal crew and the shit overall.

It’s so bad that I’ve been late so often now that I just sit in my car and stare off into space wishing I wasn’t there.

I feel you. I hit the floor running, in a panic, shoes on fire, hair on fire, until I lock the doors and then it is a mad rush to get out "on time". AWFUL.

I can totally understand & relate to this. It is unbelievable the amount of work that is required of us as SSVs. And they constantly say that we aren’t doing enough even though we work so hard & do not even get paid a livable wage. If I wasn’t married, I wouldn’t be able to survive on SSV pay. I’ve been a shift for almost 2 years now, and I used to care a lot & go above & beyond. But now, I just do what I have to do to survive the shift & make sure my baristas are okay & that I still set up my other shifts for success. Luckily, my store manager is incredible & my fellow shifts are amazing. But we all feel the same apathy & defeat. The duties of the job do get easier, but it’s just so exhausting carrying the store on our backs. I’ve been told by store managers & district managers that the SSV position is the hardest job in the company... and honestly I completely agree. If you’re looking to promote, don’t do it. It’s not worth it. You get paid barely $2 more than baristas for soooooo much more work & responsibility. I know store managers are fighting & trying to get corporate to raise our wages, but I’m not holding my breath. Starbucks says that they care about us, and the truth is:

Been a shift for 3 years now.

Eventually you get good enough at it, that it isn't hard anymore.

Edit : I'm not claiming the process of getting there is easy, by any stretch of the means. I've had my fair share of frustrating shifts, and I still feel overworked and undercompensated, but eventually it gets better and less difficult.

I disagree. I think you become apathetic and to the baristas that comes across as “cool, calm, and collected”, but to other SSV and the SM they can see that you don’t care about your job or doing it correctly. I’m still training two and three year shifts on cash management because they keep misplacing money.

Edit: of course I am only speaking to my experience in my own store and other SSV have different experiences

My closes get extra cleaning tasks done, leave before scheduled times, don't miss inventory counts, don't misplace money.

I care very much about my store and my partners.

I'm sorry your store has those issues, but I'm not one of them.

Yeah lol it’s rare that all those get done in a single night at my store. The night SSVs have openly admitted to baristas that they regret the promotion and have mentally checked out of the job. The morning SSV too.

I’m not knocking what you do, but I’ve seen more SSV give up before they ever get good at the job.

I wouldn't say I get all of the "extra" stuff every single night, but more often than not I am able to meet standards plus a little bit.

There's been times where I have checked out, I won't lie. I get jaded just like everyone else does. The block scheduling has really made running shifts so much easier.

I got out last week. I don’t miss Starbucks and I earn the same as a prep cook/ cashier/line at Taco Bell as the Starbucks shifts earn. Taco Bell shifts do slightly less work and are paid $3 more an hour at my than Starbucks’s shifts were in my district

I told my SM to skip me for getting promoted because the extra work did not look worth the 3 extra dollars
