Asking for less hours (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by anxiousneutrino
Do you think it’s dumb for me to ask my manager for less hours? It’s just so difficult for me to work 30+ hours a week while going to college full time, not to mention having any social life.

Edit: Would it be okay to text her about this? Or should I ask my manager in person?

Talk in person! Education is very important! I recently cut my hours drastically, about a third of what I was doing.

You can DEFINITELY ask for less hours. It’s totally okay. Also, there may be people in your store who may appreciate being able to get more hours. As for asking, that depends on your sm! Mine communicates mostly through text and i hardly ever see her in person, so i would text her about it. But if yours talks to you mostly in person or calls you as opposed to text when they need you, then ask in person.

just asking for less hours depends on your SM. some will agree for a few weeks and then go back to usual scheduling which is frustrating. what i found worked best was talking to your SM about business needs and trying to come up with a consistent schedule. if you ask for one or two days off every single week (preferably weekdays like Mondays and Wednesday’s every week, etc), not only will it not allow your SM to schedule you so many days in a row, but it will give you consistency which helps plan and schedule things on your own time. talk to her about what days she definitely needs you and what days more people are available. if you approach her with the business in mind she is more likely to work with you and understand your concerns, and offering her the solution of certain days off consistently will help her understand what you’re needing. if that makes sense, haha.
