I’m a new partner just 4 days into the floor and all i do is dishes(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by deku_av
Hi, i just trained last week and wednesday was my 4th day on the floor, the shift manager only has me doing dishes and cleaning and i just don’t know if i should say anything to the manager. Ive talked to a couple friends and they advised me to, because it’s all she’s had me do. I didn’t apply to be a dish washer, you know? the job is barista and i’ve learned no drinks apart from my favorite, I don’t know if it’s okay for me to even say anything? my coworker whos super nice and has been there for 4 years even told the other shift manager (who’s so much nicer btw) that all that the other sm has me do is clean. Ive learned a couple things thanks to my coworker who even told me he’d train me himself because he knows that what’s happening isn’t okay, but i don’t know what to do. The other new partners who i trained with already know so much and ive learned almost nothing, ive NEVER seen them wash the dishes :) just me :). any advice will help :(

Barista is just a catch all job title. In reality, most of us spend very little time making drinks. There are a lot of tasks that are required of you and making drinks is only one of them.
You’ve only been a partner for 2 weeks, you’ll get there. In my opinion, it’s best that trainees get well rounded on every task besides bar first. There are a few new people at my store who were trained with an emphasis on bar and getting them to do anything else besides standing by the label printer waiting for a drink to print is like pulling teeth.

THIS. I used to get extremely impatient when I first started because they did the same to me. At least at my store you have to earn your stripes and by that you start out doing dishes. There’s also a few baristas at my store who were trained and put on bar from day 1 and that’s all they know how to do. It’s extremely obnoxious and I hate working with them because I know I’ll have to do all the tasks. Learn how to CS. That’s the most important role. They’re the ones that keep the show running smoothly. Shifts can go awful without a good CS it doesn’t matter how good bar is. Do CS, a little bit of window, and then bar.

I'm a shift lead, and I know I have a bad habit of sending the same barista to the same position each night. The best thing for my Baristas to do is to ask to be elsewhere ("Can I be on bar/drive/register?" Is usually all they need to say.) I'll try to at least give them some time on said position, even if only for an hour.
Try to ask the Shift for some time on something other than customer support so you can get some practice.

I’d do that but she always has the other person who just started at the same time as me on drive through, she let me do it once for the last hour before closing and i haven’t done it since. I understand all i have to do is ask but even if i have she just sends me to do the same thing while other people who trained at the same time get to do more :(

I didn't get bar time for my first 3 months because I was the newest and no one wanted to give me a chance. You have to constantly advocate for yourself and get others to as well. About a month in of no bar I started complaining to shifts and the SM and finally about 3 months in I got a chance.

I’m lucky the SM is moving stores, the other SM always takes time to train me :,) which makes me really happy because i don’t wanna be useless, i want to be able to help at peaks, usually i just hide in the back and clean waiting for them to see if they need help. But i’m happy you advocated for yourself! sucks that this happens a lot though, some SM just don’t want to help.

I feel this. When I started, I was out at POS or DTW all the time for three months straight (with the occasional CS role). I had the same shift supervisors working certain parts of the day and I normally worked opening/peak so it sort of made sense. I remember I went to my first evening shift and told that shift supervisor that I wanted some more time on Cafe Bar because I felt out of practice. She put me on DT Bar that shift for the first time and while I was scared shitless at the time, I ended up loving it. She will put me on Bar anytime she can to this day. The other shifts I had would still keep me on POS, DTW, or CS cycle because, well, I was there so often I became good at them. I asked the shifts at the time for more variety and with the exception of the one who didn’t really listen, they said that they needed the strongest people on their strongest positions during peak. One shift (who demoted a year ago and is much more fun to work with now) said she always put new people there so they could observe and learn.
I ended up going to my manager and asking how I could get more time off of POS/DTW. I have anxiety and have a very expressive face so I know the stress shows every time. She said the same thing about strongest people in strongest positions due to me working mostly/solely mornings (read: peak) but she found ways to get me on Cafe Bar and Mobile Bar. I am back to being in the same position all the time but I don’t mind because it’s Warming and I love Warming. There was also a shift who shortly afterwards started the morning asking people what positions they wanted that day which was lovely.
So go to your shift leads/store manager and ask if you could switch it up a bit. Say you feel like you don’t have enough experience in other positions and need to exercise those muscles so to speak. A good manager/shift should be able to find a compromise where you get a chance to practice at more stations. I would also go to all your shifts you regularly work with and say, “Hey I have been here for so long and I need more practice on (insert station here). Can I do that today at some point?” They should be able to fit it in where they can if they are good at their job

I’ll try to ask, but my manager even told me going to the shifts was a good learning experience. But i haven’t really been learning much, my coworker is the one who’s been training me, but that’s not his job and i don’t want to take away from his time anymore. Most of the things i know are thanks to him, she doesn’t really take time to help me, and we’re afternoon shifts so peak is just 2 times a day at max. She also didn’t want me leaving 10 minutes early for my dentist appointment that i had already told the manager about. Thankfully the other shift manager was there and told her she should let me go because she had enough people and i was just cleaning anyways, mind you she already had something doing CS so it was just weird. She kept saying i had to do star training yet she never mentioned it at all the whole day i was there for my shift. I truly just feel that she doesn’t really like me? which is fine because i’m just there to work but it’s not really fair that she doesn’t train me as much as the other trainees.
