Phone use during a shift (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by thecuriouslittleben
I'm a SSV and I've been always laid back in terms of partners using their phones in the floor. When it's not busy and there's no customers I understand if you look through your notifications and text people. What I do not understand is why people look through their phone even while helping customers between transactions. This isn't just look at the screen for one second type of deal it's like a good minute on the screen. I'll be running around in the store making sure all things are in order and I'll see a partner just crouched in the corner tapping away. Can't people just keep themselves busy doing other things?
Call me a crazy person but I barely look at my phone during my shifts because I got bigger tasks to worry about.
I just want to see other partner's opinion on this subject and how I should go about this without seeming like a hypocrite and an asshole.

The only time I use my phone is if I need to look at a date when making backups. I think that other than that, you should only use your phone during your assigned break.

I would level with them and say exactly that, that it has gotten excessive and the store relies on cleaning and stocking during down time. It’s not that hard to stay off your phone, especially with 10s and half’s. I usually don’t bring mine on the floor unless I have something going on, then I let my shift know (ie my dog was at the vet the other day and I needed to be reached if there was an emergency).

Thanks! I guess I really should just confront them about it

I tell all my people they can have their phones on them, but they must be kept in their pockets when not in use and if I see it for more than ten seconds they have to put it in the back. Everyone seems to think that's fair and I've had no backlash.

I'll try that out. Thanks!

I just use my phone when I do dishes, connect to a Bluetooth speaker that I bring with me, and I make use of my free Spotify

I do the same when I get to do dishes as well! Sometimes I use headspace when I'm really feeling frustrated
