Rant and question? (self.starbucksbaristas)

I'm not too familiar on the subject of discipline and discrimination policies but lately at my new transfer store things have been less than par.

To explain the full scope, I'm coming up on my one year at Starbucks and I loved working at my original store. It made me excited to be at work everyday and I'd always pick up shifts. However, once I moved because we bought a home I figured my store was going to be similar. I was very wrong.

The current location was very different from the start. I wasn't showed where things were stocked and asked to complete several things at a time when I wasn't done with the first few tasks I had in hand. This wasn't too bothering to me as some of the partners slowly started to warm up to me.

However, the situation seemed to okay for a short while until the SM started becoming very passive aggressive. As in example, I let them know I was pregnant and I wasn't able to work on 2 days out of the week. (this hadn't been an issue before) So, it seemed after that I was being closely watched. I accidentally left a tool in my pocket and when I returned it my SM sternly said " it should be there at all times for everyone to use, I don't see what's so hard about that". I kept quiet and shrug it off.

Then, come to find out recently that the SM was being replaced? I received a phone call from a new SM who wanted to talk about my situation and get a better understanding of each partner. Turns out they were very coming of my availability. As I tried to explain I cannot work on the said two days, I was able to come in any of other days but I was greeted with "we can't always get what we want, I'm reviewing everyone's schedules and will be letting go of anyone who has horrible availability. If you decide to open up the other two days feel free to contact us back." This response wasn't one I was expecting to hear from anyone as stated above I never had any issues with my availability nor have I changed it since joining the company.

I just wonder if it's possible to be fired just because I can't work two days out of the week?

First of all, you won’t be fired. If your manager decides that your availability doesn’t match the needs of the store, then your options are to change your availability, find a store that can support your availability, or quit. Without knowing more details about your store and your availability, it’s impossible to know what the situation is or why your manager is reacting this way. There could be staffing issues you’re not aware of, or it’s possible that this new manager has been brought in because your previous manager messed things up. My manager won’t hire anyone without a Friday - Sunday availability. Every manager is different and unfortunately, we’re all living in their worlds.

Gotcha, that's what I figured but I was unsure if they could use that against you. Thank you greatly for you input.

I didn't want to cause anyone any trouble either since I just transferred and it seemed like there was some things going on before I even arrived. I just didn't expect to hear that right off the bat.

Ummmm if you’re pregnant, your SM should be working with you to ensure your safety at the job, including the two days off that I assume you have so that you can adequately rest because you’re growing a literal human being?? I would recommend getting in touch with your doctor and having any restrictions on weight, # of hours on your feet, cannot bend over excessively, etc. put into writing. If they aren’t willing to work with you on your time off, I worry that having restrictions on your work load will also be an issue.

My husband said something like this too. However, I'll have to do that when my next appointment is. I didn't think of that yet. Thank you greatly for this 🙏

My store had to have a partner get a doctors note. She wasn’t allowed to do anything but DTO/DTR, occasionally bar. She couldn’t get ice or take trash bags out of full cans.
