Is cup splitting against policy?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by quanday123
I've been working with the company for nearly two years now and our store has experienced an odd increase in the number of customers asking to split venti drinks into two tall cups.
I've been enforcing what I believed to be the policy that this is not something we can do, however the workaround is that we can just give customers an extra cup. A customer did not take kindly to this rule about a week ago and contacted corporate/our dm. Today, she comes in and demands we save her the buck fifty and split it with special permission from up above.
She had called us previously and cussed out a partner so she had an incident report filed against her. In the end, we made an exception for her and explicitly stated so. Now I'm curious, is this truly a rule and where can I find it?

i’m not sure where you can find it but i’ve always been told my a supervisor - who is very by the book - that we are not allowed to split drinks for customers, but we can give them an extra cup

This ^^^

That has been the exact same experience for me. I simply tell the customers what I know. I was just curious if there was anywhere that explicitly stated such. I'll keep looking, thanks!

When people ask me to split a venti into 2 talls I say “so you want 2 talls?” If they say no then I ring the venti and then give them the venti drink with 2 tall cups on the side. Let them deal with the inconvenience.

That's what i tell my partners to do when they have someone ask for that, it usually works every time. I guess this is an exception lol. Thanks, though!

This is against policy and was sent out to stores via weekly update a few months ago.

i was always told to “make the moment right” but as a shift, when it was my floor i didn’t let my baristas split anything bigger than a tall ( a tall split into two cups won’t even fill up all the way but anything bigger will ). i’ve never heard a formal rule or policy abt it tho... if you find it please post !

“Make the moment right” is such bs. Like I’ll be damned giving people free shit. My shift gives away free drinks when people go “Oh I wanted X more of that” and expects us to prioritize it over actual paying guests. I don’t believe in rewarding people that can’t do the bare minimum of ordering properly

As a shift, I hold the same mentality as yourself. Making the moment right or whatever is usually the easiest route to go down, but this certain customer had just been causing such a ruckus and I felt wrong just letting her get away with cussing us out.

So we have this guy that asks for a grande pike, then wants you to split into another grande , then steam 2% to the top for both cups. I’m like so you want two misto’s?? And is what I charge for
lovelydare3 points2y ago
does anyone know about giving out the extras of fraps that dont fit in the cup? is that allowed

my manager taught me no; they paid for x amount of ounces and x amount of ounces they will get- unless they order shots. if they pay to add shots, then we give them the rest so they get all of the espresso they paid for

super smart! gonna talk to my manager about it

Hi i love and respect all of you. i have a question as a customer. why wouldn’t you do what the guest wants just because? Like why not? Starbucks is a global brand, they use prison labor, as common as walmart, if not more. As big as big business gets. does it offend you personally when people want deals—to save $3. Is it a moral thing? I’ve worked retail and service and i know the tiring difficult grind and rude customers. without the “my manager would get upset” please someone explain. because i know those are very easy orders to “just do” and have the customer leave happy and save $3 rather than make it a huge thing and end up getting written up. karens are evil but it’s like they are only trying to save $2–starbucks won’t miss the $2 and you won’t have rude karen’s calling managers. again. love you all. just wondering if it’s a moral thing or.....

It's one of those, "give them an inch, they'll take a yard" situation
uwu8D0 points2y ago
that’s what i was thinking, people get carried away with their requests and start to take advantage. but just the day to day people, why not? we’re all in this hellhole together—save your fellow human a dollar because you can
amazing_redhead7 points2y ago
Because we want to save that slice of dignity and modicum of authority we have to not be taken advantage of
uwu8D1 points2y ago
i totally get that. so when someone asks for a deal, it threatens the baristas authority. so it IS a moral objection on a personal level. i have to point out tho that when ppl ask for stuff like this (and they know their being a lil sneaky) they look at starbucks as a multi billion dollar company that can well afford -$2 not as the straight A student barista looking for an inkling of respect from consumers. i understand the offense on both sides.

In addition to the fact that it’s just annoying when customers try to get us to do things not to standard, we’re told that the way to earn more labor and not be short-staffed is to make more sales. Pretty sure two talls earns more labor than one venti.

This is my reasoning. It’s also why I make sure people order their ice waters at the register.
