Likely hasn't told us to do that, we just do it automatically because especially during a rush, it's so much easier to chuck them a straw too than to go back & hand a straw when we're trying to move on to the next customer

Yup. We got got too many requests and at this point it slows the line down.

I think I accidentally guilted a person into passing on the straw today lol
he wanted a straw
I looked at him
he looked at me
I look at his strawless lid
he looks at his straw-less lid
I look at him
he nervously laughs and walks out

I had a customer ask me why we switched to the new lids and I just said to save the turtles! To which she responded “that’s stupid can I have my straw now” like okay

Whenever I ask someone if they want a straw and they say no, I say “thanks for saving turtles”’!

Oh Karen u r the problem

I've been doing like "Oh! You want a straw? So sorry, we aren't automatically handing them out anymore because we have these new strawless lids, which are easier to recycle. Just ask us if you need one and we'll absolutely give you one, though!" With a sickly-sweet guilt-tripping tone... More often they will decide to agree with me & not take a straw :) But my customer service voice is Snow White-tier

We've had people come in asking for the straw lids, I'm like they no longer exist. This is your new normal.

Someone asked about the strapless lids and when we explained Starbucks was trying to limit straws to help the environment she legit just looked at me and said “yeah but no one cares about the environment. so why should we have to drink out of an adult sippy cup because of a stupid turtle?” uGggh the SELF CONTROL. I was FUMING and refused to give her a straw bc if you’re going to throw a tantrum of a straw like a toddler, then you’ll drink out of a “sippy cup” like a toddler ✨
She had an iced vanilla latte! So no, she did not /need/ a straw.

People come in and are like “where’s the straw” “oh well we actually have new strawless lids“ “i still want my straw” ......like that defeats the WHOLE DAMN PURPOSE

Customer here, this might be a good place to ask what I came here hoping to find out - Is this why in the past few weeks all my SB deliveries now come with the strawless lid? Has my store finally made the 'strawfree by 2020' switch?

Ya
strawbubbie_2 points2y ago
so many ppl be asking for a damn straw.... how many times am i gonna have to hear my coworkers say “they won’t fit in the new lids we’re trying to go strawless”
forestman111 points2y ago
They do fit in the new lids....

We had a lady at my store complain because she couldn't figure out how to stuff a straw in to the strawless lid. Mind you it took 4 people (3 customers and my fellow partner) to help convince her and show her that there was in fact a small spout in the lid for her to drink from. But she still couldn't fit the straw in it because she said she couldn't see the spout 🤦🤦🤦

Stop guilting people when they ask for straws. I’m a Starbucks barista. My wife looks totally able-bodied, but they have nerve damage that sometimes causes their hands to shake, making drinking out of strawless lids difficult (and sometimes impossible). I’m autistic, and sometimes I physically can’t stand the feeling of hot or cold things on my teeth. Like, it causes me physical pain. People don’t have to look disabled for baristas to think they “deserve” a damn straw.
The large majority of the plastic pollution in the ocean is from discarded industrial fishing gear, but I don’t see any baristas asking how many customers eat fish before handing out straws.
Hell, one of the largest polluters in the entire world is the US military - it has one of the biggest carbon footprints and consumes more liquid fossil fuels and emits more CO2 than most countries. Bet a lot of folks here still support it though.

I think people are more upset with those who seem entitled, but i understand where you're coming from.
