Interview and being transgender (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by thelonelyneko
Hello!! I am a trans man with an interview tomorrow. I have not started my transition at all, and put my birth name and gender down on my application and I was wondering how I would go about bringing up wanting to be called by my preferred name and such during the interview. If anyone has tips about any benefits as well, it would be appreciated. 💖💖

I would be as upfront as you want to be and go from there. When you introduce yourself you can say, “Hi my legal name is x but I prefer to be called y,” and let the manager make inferences from there. Or during the interview, the manager will probably ask why you want to work for Starbucks and you can use that as an opportunity to say how you had heard that Starbucks was company that supported its trans partners by offering benefits to help cover reassignment surgery and that’s a benefit you can foresee yourself wanting to take advantage of in the future. Or anywhere inbetween, whatever *you* feel comfortable doing.

on ur application there was a slot to put your preferred name actually! there should be no judgment, just straight away when they say hello and call you by your birth name, kindly say
"hey! about my name, without going into too much detail i am trans and would appreciate being called _____."
be upfront, honest, kind, and energetic. it'll take you far. good luck!!!!!!

I told them my preferred name when I was introducing myself, and that I went by he/him pronouns. They switched without a problem! Then when you onboard, there's a spot for how you want your name to show up in the system! Best of luck!

I was called for an interview today and they called me by my preferred name that I put down in the Preferred Name field box when I applied online on their website. I’m pretty sure you can tell them you have a preferred name at the beginning of your interview when you introduce yourself. I’m sure there won’t be any problem at all! I also have a phone interview tomorrow at Starbucks! Good luck!

on the application it asked for a preferred name, but my store manager called me by my legal name during the interview. He later asked if I had a preferred name and i told him i prefer my gender neutral nickname and he was super chill about it! if you don’t want to be dead named i would mention it as soon as possible if you didn’t mention it on the application!

I second what a lot of folks are saying-- be upfront about it! And good luck from a fellow trans man!

I’d just start out with something like, “hey, by the way I’d just like to note that I’m a trans man so I use he/him pronouns and use x name!” after greeting. Your manager should be able to put your preferred name in the system if you get hired!
