Trainers: what was the process like to become a trainer? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Critical50
So about 2 months ago my SM asked me if I wanted to be a trainer. I said of course. A few weeks ago she said we will have to talk more about me becoming a trainer, and the expectations. Since then, we've hired approximately 6-7 people. Ive been credited with training 0 people, but have been basically training a lot of them on things like bar and POS.

Our store is low on experienced people that SSVs can rely on to help make up for the new hires on the floor. So we're borrowing people from other locations. Today, one of those people told me shes also going to be training people at my store. While Im waiting to train people..

So now its starting to feel like my SM just offered the trainer position to me just so I wont leave for a bit longer.

Im not mad but kinda annoyed. The people who have been credited with training have been my SSVs. Except all he did really was explain how to make drinks. Explained how different sizes get the 3, 4 or 6 syrup pumps. How many shots go in drinks and such. Theeen, Im just expected to bar with them in the middle of rush and repeatedly explain to them how to make drinks.

If you’re the one who sits with them in the back while they’re doing their computer training, you are their trainer. If you’re being asked to supervise and help them learn after their initial training period, that’s a part of the expectations of a barista (it’s that whole scale of learning / comprehending / teaching, I forget what it’s called in Starbucks terms). We’re all expected to help each other learn. We’re all expected to coach each other. It’s part of our job description as baristas.

I would just be up front with your manager and be like, “Hey I heard from x the other day that they’re going to be training some new partners for our store. I‘ve really appreciated the experience of being so hands on with teaching the new hires that I feel like I’m ready to step into the trainer position. When do you think I’ll be able to start officially training new hires?”

So they wanted to be a trainer yet not pay you the bonus. Sketchy but typical.

This sounds like a pretty common song and dance with training..

Oh yeah. I am a “barista trainer” but I refused after training 2 ppl bc that shit is a scam to get more work out of you for basically the same pay. You don’t even get a bonus unless the trainee stays for 3 months iirc. FUCK THAT.

You are entitled to the training bonus as soon as the trainee finishes barista basics.

The 3 month waiting period is for the referral bonus.

Nope, I disagree.

I’ve trained 11 people after going through training and receiving my trainer pin... I’ve never gotten a “bonus” for training anyone ...
