Ah yes, another payday where I wake up and check my bank account and my heart sinks because it’s absolute trash(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by childishgamblin
I’m honestly so tired of this. I know I’m not alone but I’m just frustrated, I feel like work absolutely drains me all week even when it’s only like a 25 hours and the compensation is just never enough. The only time I was cool with it was when we got hazard pay and ever since then I am super bitter every payday. It’s like a vicious cycle at this point
ContentAd490105 points2y ago
Yeah I got my last paycheck today and I anticipated it being more and some how I always overestimate it and get sad.
childishgamblin [OP]27 points2y ago
Same here, it’s never the amount I’m expecting
merikkdraws86 points2y ago
Yeah I got used to hazard pay and was getting more hours then too.. now it’s like $200 less. Beginning of this month I was left with $14 after rent. Had to open up commissions again and am still looking for a second job even though I know it’ll destroy my mental health. We love capitalism....
childishgamblin [OP]31 points2y ago
I definitely get that, I have like $20-30 left now after I pay my bills and it sucks. Just go to work, study, sleep, repeat. That’s what I’m worried about with a second job as well too. But good luck my friend, I hope it gets better for you truly ❤️
merikkdraws9 points2y ago
Hope it does for you as well 💕

I do paintings mostly! I’m working on a big acrylic one at the moment
[deleted]6 points2y ago
I love paintings! I know you are having a hard time rn so if you’d be able to I’d like to commission a painting from you if time permits
merikkdraws4 points2y ago
oh! Reddit was the last place I was expecting this fsfddd but thank you! i have info about it on my twitter under the same name
ProletarianProblems4 points2y ago
The other day I had this overwhelming urge to yell "FUCK CAPITALISM" at the top of my lungs while driving through my neighborhood with the windows down, and let me tell ya, it was so incredibly therapeutic if only for a moment. Side note: we should unionize.
merikkdraws3 points2y ago
my state is a right to work state I fucking w i s h
ProletarianProblems2 points2y ago
Ffff. 😩I forget about RiGhT tO wOrK laws now that I’ve been living in Washington for a few years. It’s a fairly pro-union state, and my community has a ton of union workers from different industries (with the exception of large corporate chain employees🙋🏼), so I guess I’m living in a bubble in that regard.
AndrewtheRey2 points2y ago
Your community sounds cool. My very red state is not very unionized especially with construction workers and some of the staunch anti unionists will make Facebook arguments about “how would my boss make money?” And if you ask them in person wouldn’t they make more, they’ll reply “well they take dues out of the check and they’re corrupt and they don’t work as much” but whatever. The few Union people in my state do very well.

I feel. At Starbucks I would ALWAYS overestimate my paycheck At my new job I always underestimate it, and it’s such a relief. You are worth so much more than that company gives And you sure as hell are worth more than a Disney playlist and a free mental health app, and especially worth more than free Spotify. I keep hoping they’ll change, cause I do miss my coworkers, but it’s not worth the financial burden I put myself thru. I hope you get lots of commissions!
Alohomora4202 points2y ago
Where are you working now if you don’t mind me asking. I’ve been thinking about leaving Starbucks for a while now.
junekusama3 points2y ago
I work at a distribution center for a retail company! Dicks Sporting Goods! The supervisors are really nice and I don’t feel stressed and overworked. I can go at my own pace while not feeling like I have to be faster or keep up with people around me if I’m having an off day. I found a local temp agency and used them to kind of hop around the industry’s around me to get a feel, otherwise I would’ve never found where I work now. I hope you find a great new job!
_gregosaurus_20 points2y ago
I used to be a SSV but got burnt out sooooo quick that I stepped down and picked up a second job to even survive 😬
childishgamblin [OP]18 points2y ago
The burnout is SO real, people I try to talk to who have never done customer service just don’t get it. It’s a completely different kind of tired and frustrated
_gregosaurus_3 points2y ago
It just makes me sad because I’ve been with the company so long and it wasn’t always like this 😫
childishgamblin [OP]1 points2y ago
It really hasn’t been, that’s why it’s even more sad to see
officialsmolkid17 points2y ago
I’m on a medical leave and Sedgwick literally said here’s $114 like I can’t afford rent 😳
childishgamblin [OP]12 points2y ago
Dude that’s shit, I’m sorry. I hope you feel better and can get back on your feet soon, how anyone expects someone to live on that I have no idea
shimmyeatworldpeace15 points2y ago
I’m really sorry it’s like this. I completely feel your pain and frustration. I looked this morning and after taxes and health insurance, my paycheck was $254... I worked 31 hours one week and 26 hours the next week... I CANNOT BELIEVE IT. I wish I didn’t feel the need to get rid of health and dental insurance but it keeps crossing my mind... the kicker is that health insurance and school were the reason I started working there.
I have a second job that used to pay my bills and Covid completely messed that up. When the restaurant eventually opens back up and I start to serve tables again... maybe the starbucks paychecks won’t sting as much? I don’t know... everything is confusing and nothing makes sense.
Why do we put ourselves through this shit just to survive? Is this surviving or is this dying? Are we stuck in a loop contrived by the true rulers of this world? I think so.
childishgamblin [OP]3 points2y ago
It really does provoke those mind boggling and almost existential questions doesn’t it? Like some days it just feels like why am I even going in, it doesn’t make sense, etc. I totally feel you. I wish it wasn’t so but this is the world we’re living in right now, made even worse by this virus that’s just fueling our anxieties and cutting our hours. I just feel like the company could still give us hazard pay ya know, we’re still at risk and we’re dealing with an insane amount of customers every day. I don’t get it. But I’m here for you friend, we WILL get through this!
shimmyeatworldpeace2 points2y ago
Thank you, kind soul! Sending some good vibes your way ❤️❤️
kaitlyn_vargas13 points2y ago
I’m always scared to look at it like am I going to have enough to pay my bills and have a life or not. The anxiety is real
childishgamblin [OP]8 points2y ago
FREAKING YES. It’s getting to the point where I dread it, and I feel guilty because some people still aren’t even able to work but it’s just exhaustion and being treated badly that comes before not getting paid enough I hate I guess
Sarqaah11 points2y ago
I work at Target Starbucks. If there are too many baristas you don't get the hours. I got dropped to nine hours this week for no reason. Keep this is mind.
alimcc022010 points2y ago
Your team lead needs to stop hiring so many people I havent had less than 38 for the last 2 years
catgal42010 points2y ago
It’s so dumb how little we’re paid. Hour cuts are killing me. On top of the fact I’ve only gotten .89 more over the FOUR YEARS I’ve worked with Starbucks.
childishgamblin [OP]4 points2y ago
It really is ridiculous, loyalty apparently gets you nothing with this company
ProletarianProblems9 points2y ago
Now is an excellent time to unionize and wield collective power to have our demands met.
childishgamblin [OP]6 points2y ago
See I feel that but my partners at my store don’t seem to be feeling the exact same way as me. However I’m also a transfer so I still don’t feel like I can tell them everything (like as far as venting and bitching about the company) quite yet. It’s weird because some days they seem as stressed and pissed off as me and others they seem to be handling it better.
ProletarianProblems2 points2y ago
Yeah, I feel ya. We have several new partners at my store who seem to drink the Kook-Aid. It’s hard to tell because like you said, some days they seem to be handling it better than others. Maybe I’ll invite them over for dinner and drinks and pick their brains about it. From what I can tell though, a majority of retail partners have had it.
childishgamblin [OP]1 points2y ago
We have a lot of green beans too so I can’t discuss a lot of this in earnest yet haha but yeah, one of these days I just may have to be more frank and upfront to see if they’re on the same page. I mean I’ve definitely already gotten the vibe from a few so there’s hope
sadmadbarista6 points2y ago
Oh yeah literally the smallest paycheck i think i’ve ever gotten and still only getting scheduled 15 hours a week 😖
BrownKid60004 points2y ago
I feel you. And yeah I just felt super drained too. The burnout can be rough. Find whatever soothes you and always always make time for that. I’ll be praying for you as well as all the partners out there. Working for Starbucks has definitely given me a new feeling than what I used to have. We’ll make it through, keep pushing partners!
childishgamblin [OP]3 points2y ago
Totally agree, the feeling is different now. I’ll be praying as well, that means so much! Good luck friend! I’m rooting for all of us 😭
lilkiosk4 points2y ago
Literally, someone from my store was talking about how they had less than $5 in their bank account and they’re a shift lead. Like??? It’s not even fair.
childishgamblin [OP]4 points2y ago
Right like that’s freaking sad when you’re supposed to be a superior at a stable job and you have no money. Something is up if that’s going on
spicypotatogurl4 points2y ago
I understand... all I do is working. I can't do much else because with all my bills, and me being the only one working, I have nothing left... it sucks...
childishgamblin [OP]4 points2y ago
Definitely feel ya, my friend invited me to get drinks for her birthday tomorrow but I don’t even think I can afford it. I just want a life.
spicypotatogurl3 points2y ago
I know... little shit like that hurts the most. And now my apartment after 8 months of living there is trying to tack on some mystery $50 fee that they didn't even explain what it's for 🙄
childishgamblin [OP]4 points2y ago
OMG BEEN THERE! The complex I just left in June had a $50 usage fee to pay rent online. I asked if we could do a check or any other form of payment and they were like “no you have to pay the $50 a month to do it online” they’ll get you any way they can I swear
spicypotatogurl1 points2y ago
Nah it's not even to pay it online. There's a $30 fee to pay online but I don't pay online. So IMMA FIGHT
Critical504 points2y ago
I worked near 80ish hours one pay cycle. Usually getting near 60. My paycheck only looked about $70 more than usual..
And that paycheck was only near $600.
childishgamblin [OP]3 points2y ago
It never seems to add up???
Alex_jcw4 points2y ago
I went through the same thing this morning dude. It fucking sucks. I had to ask my family for money which to me is the most embarrassing thing.
consciouscell883 points2y ago
Unionize!
angrymops3 points2y ago
Yeah I’m almost done with the last of my two weeks. Got threatened by a customer. Very scary and not worth the shitty paychecks. My mental and physical health have never been worse. I’m so excited to get out of here
childishgamblin [OP]2 points2y ago
Your mental and physical well being are absolutely so much more important, I’m glad you’re taking care of yourself ❤️❤️
SupposedSiren893 points2y ago
I worked retail for 12/13 years before Starbucks. I can put up with a LOT OF SHIT. But. I left Starbucks exactly 2 months ago, to the utter SHOCK of my manager. 1.5-2 hours OT after close because we are so busy every night. Barely seeing my son. I would get home at 12/1am stay up to unwind till 4ish. Sleep all day till noon or so and go to work two hours after that. For SSV pay. Was. Not. Worth. It. I ended up calling out my last week from the stress of both jobs. When asked what did Starbucks teach me, I said "I learned that you can't always get what you want, even if you need it. And I learned to step up for myself."
theturtlelady2 points2y ago
I relate to this so much. I worked in customer service before as an employee and a manager and I had ZERO problem standing up for myself and telling the customer no. When I got to Starbucks, and even now at my current job I get so scared to say no.
SupposedSiren891 points2y ago
Starbucks is a bit too coddling with customers.
childishgamblin [OP]2 points2y ago
I think that’s a great way to look at it after that shitty experience and I’m really proud that you could find something else and better your situation. It really is so so draining sometimes, the sleeping all of the time I definitely get. I’ve had to stop that since I started school back but some days that’s all I could do. I hope life has been treating you a lot better since you changed jobs!
SupposedSiren892 points2y ago
It has, thank you! I miss my team insanely though. I was third oldest there and as a self proclaimed "mama bear" friend, I worry about them all daily. I haven't had time to stop by and see my old night crew but I plan to very soon! I was one month away from a year at Starbucks, made friends with many of them quickly too. I can't imagine having worked with a better group of (mostly) girls. The manager isn't stupid, but very... Unaccepting of help. I hope she learns to ask for it as much as she stressed to all of us to ask for help. But I hope she GETS help. I've been in her situation, no training and a crew to manage. But I hope she realizes the needs of the store before it goes worse
childishgamblin [OP]2 points2y ago
That’s one thing I can definitely say that’s been so wonderful about Starbucks, my coworkers. I’ve maybe had 2 I can’t stand out of the many I’ve had at two different stores. Everyone is just so funny and unique and just all around enjoyable to work with and so I think that’s why I hesitate to leave so much as well. The environment with them in it makes the difference. I hope you get to visit them soon! I know what you mean about the higher ups as well, I don’t think it’s stupidity but something needs to change.
notaregularbarista3 points2y ago
I wish I got 25 hours. I would be happy with even 20 but every week it gets worse. We are now down to 13 hours for baristas and 20 hours for a SSV.
childishgamblin [OP]3 points2y ago
That’s INSANITY, I’m so sorry. I think the only reason I get what I get is because I’m on mornings, which our store always needs more man power for. And also most people can’t do full shifts in the mornings like I’m able to and quite honestly, I know a lot of partners avoid mornings now just because of the shit shows that have been happening
notaregularbarista4 points2y ago
I’m a main opener too. It’s just we are a small cafe store. I love being a opener. I rather be an opener to be honest but yeah...the shit shows that happen on the daily is exhausting. Closers actually probably have it easier at my store since we close by 6pm. It’s all insane no matter what shift you work though. Lol.
childishgamblin [OP]1 points2y ago
That’s true, it’s been like 8 months since I’ve closed but I do remember some rough closing nights haha.
lidialuna76073 points2y ago
Heard that !
Elliotisnotokay2 points2y ago
Same. This shit sucks
kait_lynb2 points2y ago
I feel you, my last check was literally $97.05
childishgamblin [OP]3 points2y ago
Whaaaaat dude I’m so sorry I am honestly more infuriated for everyone on this post than myself at this point
kait_lynb1 points2y ago
Yeah it is what it is unfortunately. I’m a full time student so I can only work baby shifts 3 days a week, they only schedule me for one of those days. I’ve tried looking for another job but no where wants me because of that too so like I kinda gotta deal with it. I’m just lucky with my personal circumstances
childishgamblin [OP]2 points2y ago
I feel that, a lot of people don’t understand that looking for another job isn’t always as easy as it seems. It’s very stressful too and then you have to train and it’s just a whole process. I’m lucky as well in that, I moved in with a family member so I don’t have as many bills. So I am thankful for that, I just hate this is such a widespread issue now for all of us, I can handle myself struggling. That’s nothing new but all of my fellow baristas having the same issue just speaks to how terrible this really is.
kait_lynb2 points2y ago
Honestly, I used to love working for Starbucks. But ever since Covid, everything has gone downhill :/
nattie152 points2y ago
Yeahhh.. as a shift.. it’s real disappointing living paycheck to paycheck.
childishgamblin [OP]2 points2y ago
I can imagine, so much responsibility and not much payback
harleyhoudini2 points2y ago
I agree. That was me today. I was just so... defeated. All this hard work and that’s what it’s worth? Oh please.
childishgamblin [OP]3 points2y ago
It’s so rough dude, I’m with you 100%
RenEldritch1 points2y ago
I am a 7 year partner (188xxxx) and found out recently that I only make 25 cents more than a day one hire. fml
RenEldritch1 points2y ago
How is it that the hiring wage increases faster than the yearly raise current / long term partners receive? I wish I had the courage and mental strength to find another job. But I am too much of a pathetic coward. Anyone have any luck talking with PCC about raises? Just looking for some hope to cling onto.
childishgamblin [OP]1 points2y ago
Sickening. I’m sorry friend, I hope we feel more appreciated soon
sdkid921 points2y ago
Weird I don’t remember making this post /s
RosyHue1 points2y ago
I have $17 left after my bills, and I have to quit my second job for my mental health. The staff there don’t take covid seriously, and the anxiety has gotten unreal. I’m stressed about losing half my income and having to make it up with extra shifts at the bux. I’m constantly on the edge of a breakdown, and this Disney playlist is the opposite of helpful lol. I’m honestly hoping for another shutdown, or at least catastrophe pay, but I’m not holding my breath
childishgamblin [OP]2 points2y ago
Me either, I think they’ve already gone too far so this is what it is now and I just hope it gets better. I mean I don’t see how but that’s just the optimist in me I suppose. I really hope it gets better for all of us and that you can take some time to breathe and get your mental health straight, just remember (as cheesy and obvious as it sounds), that comes before all of this bullshit. Coffee is at the end of that totem pole lmao
JLA666-26 points2y ago
So for any and all baristas that work at Starbucks, my advice is this: Don’t work at Starbucks. I know, crazy right? Here me out. As apposed to making like $9, just quit and apply at Target, specifically inside the Starbucks department where you could be naming $15 an hour. Are you really as hard of a worker as you think?? Then you could move up to a Food Service Team Lead and be making $19 an hour, if the position is open. Stop settling for less when you could be doing the exact same thing you do now but for more money. Target is always hiring and they’re always hiring in Starbucks because they’re desperate. So you could be a Target employee and a barista while making more. Don’t take my word for it though. Check it out. It’s what I did. I applied at Starbucks and they rejected me. So I applied at Target too and got hired by Target as a barista and I still don’t regret it. I make a whole lot more then I would working at a licensed store AND I got promoted (what I mentioned earlier) so I’m very content with my paychecks. Do I wish I made more) who doesn’t? But that’s what happens when you pay taxes AND have insurance through Target. You guys should really look into it AT THE VERY LEAST
childishgamblin [OP]20 points2y ago
Listen I hear you, and I think that’s a great idea, but the nearest Target to me is like 50 minutes away and I definitely can’t afford that gas and the time I’d spend driving there a bunch as I’m in school as well. Living in the small town I’m in right now is part of the problem, there’s not many great options. I’ve thought about going back to bar tending/serving but with restaurants at 50% capacity I really don’t think I’d be making that much more money. So I don’t know, I’d love to do that but it’s not feasible at the moment. Trust me, if I could find something better that I have experience at and could make more and be treated better, I definitely would.
smilygirrl126 points2y ago
I mean I don't know where you live, but it's not California. Minimum wage here is $13 an hour and I make more than that as a shift supervisor. I used to work in a grocery store Starbucks years ago and it was worse than an actual Starbucks. I've now been with Starbucks for over 3 years and it has its moments but I honestly wouldn't be able to find another job that pays close to my current pay. So I'm not leaving for the time being. Plus they pay for school and I'm very close to being done with my Bachelor's degree. In my opinion, Starbucks pays pretty well when you add in paying for school because that is not cheap! I agree that it's not very helpful to tell people just to quit.. during a pandemic when money is already tight and jobs are scarce.
JLA6661 points2y ago
California?? Dang. I live in Texas. Lucky you then. That’s great! I’m glad you have a good job going for you. That’s true. They do pay for your school. That’s why I first applied there but again, they never got back to me so lol
smilygirrl125 points2y ago
I mean it's good that I get paid as much as I do but california is expensive and rent in my area is very high. So with a higher minimum wage comes a higher living expense. But it is what it is because I can't move out of california at the moment but I will in the near future. But yes the schooling is great. You should try contacting them again because once you're in, it's very easy and they guide you through it.
xbarbiedarbie3 points2y ago
I dont know why you're being downvoted. I worked at starbucks inside target for 4 years before getting hired at a regular starbucks. The pay is better at target and they dont open as early or close as late. Theres no drive through times to stress about and the rushes aren't nearly as rushed. Target has it's own shitty shit they do, just like every other job on the planet, but it was less stressful and if target had better insurance and other benefits, I would think hard about going back. I left because I was doing most of the Starbucks and cafe team lead's job without getting paid for it but I was still getting all of the stress that comes with doing inventory, placing the orders, putting away the orders, assigning breaks and breaking down the store for cleaning 5 nights a week while also being the face customers talked to when they wanted to speak to a manager. It was hard and at the time I was only getting about $12.50 an hour for doing the team lead's job (TL gets about $21 an hour) and the stress just wasn't worth it.
JLA6660 points2y ago
Tbh thanks for saying that. I didn’t even notice I was getting downvoted until you mentioned it but I mean it’s whatever if I am- I’m just trying to help these people but some people either don’t want to be helped or told they are wrong but I don’t care. I just tried to help 😂😅 if they don’t want it or care for it then that’s up to them ya know?
astivana13 points2y ago
1. Not everyone is near a Tarbucks 2. There aren’t enough Tarbucks jobs for every barista 3. “Have you considered not working there” is both terrible advice and patronizing and ESPECIALLY bad during a global pandemic where jobs are in short supply. Not everyone has the luxury of just quitting a job and finding an alternative, better one immediately/knowing that they won’t be plunged into homelessness and extreme poverty because they have no income.
smilygirrl125 points2y ago
I agree completely with everything you said. During a time like this, just quitting a job isn't good advice for people who need money to pay bills. If you still live at home and have no bills, then sure that's an option. But honestly I feel like a lot of people here have bills and rent to pay and taking the risk of quitting and finding a new job isn't worth the possibility of finding something better.
