Yeah that’s pretty unfortunate but I have to agree with Zkitty12 I don’t believe that it’s that they want to keep him, I think Joe may have some sort of disability which creates even more hassle to fire him, which can make it a tricky situation. However there are ways to effectively deal with this without firing that employee. One solution is that the manager can make that specific employees life hell that way they feel like they need to quit, while I generally don’t condone this considering the circumstances with this partner just neglecting his work I would actually understand if a manager does this. Another solution is to cut his hours as much as is allowed, not enough hours means he has to find a different job or do better to earn those hours. Also not only cut Joe’s hours but only schedule him the times he hates working

I have considered a hidden disability and my partner agreed it was a possibility. That's why I have been so incredibly patient because I do not want to discriminate. I am glad to get others perspective on it as well

Not saying the person doesn't deserve to be fired, (bc partners you dread to work with bc of performance.. every shift... Need to get it together) but maybe they have a hidden disability that makes firing him alot of paperwork or a potential lawsuit against the company. Corporate won't okay a fire for anyone at my store at all. Maybe it's the dm and not the sm? But I def think you're vaild in your feelings but unless they do something very specifically bad, I think any effort to bring their misbehavior up to mangament would ultimately look bad on yo(which it shouldn't but politics of a work environment)

I have been considering the hidden disability too. That's why I am trying to be patient

Thanks to all that have replied and will. I have seen a hidden disability brought up many times. I will say that I have considered it and have been very thoughtful with it. I also have a hidden disability.

I have just been getting a tad frustrated with his actions and behavior lately

I don't know the specifics, but I had similar things happen at my store (unfortunately).. There were people who simply refused to do certain tasks. Two people would flat out just tell the SSV's that they "won't do" trash runs. So then, me, someone who is really good on bar, would have to do trash runs, while the two meh bar people were on bar or DT or POS. Another partner at my store was asked to do a green sweep of the parking lot, and it took them 2 and a half hours, for a lot that's literally the size of our cafe. No retaliation, no comments, warnings, nothing.

My store also has a partner who has been there for like 2 years and makes very, very, offensive comments about people of certain political backgrounds on the floor in front of customers, and no one ever says anything. My store had a bunch of teenagers working at it as well, who were all close friends, and they would bring in their HS gossip to work, and annoy basically everyone else working since they were constantly talking about boyfriends/girlfriends/explicit stuff/and texting or playing on their phones. Again, manager did nothing.

I also had a SSV be rude to me, since I'm a minor, and I went to let them know that it was coming up on the 4hrs, and that I had to take a break (it's federal law that minors must take a 30min break every 4hrs, so if I didn't, the store would literally be fined thousands of dollars).. No sooner did I turn my back to go back onto DT, then I hear this SSV mocking me to another partner, about how entitled I am to get a break. I didn't report this, but the manager and pretty much every other partner knew that this guy is the most condescending, rude person on the planet, and other people heard him mocking me, including the manager, and they did nothing. The manager, when myself and 4-5 other people came on, literally had to tell the other partners to "be nice to" the green beans.

Anyways, my point is that Starbucks doesn't seem to fire many people, unless if it is something really, really, really serious. I also believe that SM's have to get a DM's approval, and without 3 write ups on record or something really bad, it won't happen. If you SM hasn't at least written Joe up a couple of times, then firing him would look horrible, since there's no record of him being a bad employee, and, unfortunately, many managers just refuse to write people up for stuff like that. As a few other people said, he could also have a disability or veteran status that makes it incredibly difficult to fire him. One last thing, if your store has a particularly high turnover, a manager might not want to let someone go, since it's first just a hassle to replace them, but also it makes them look worse with the already high turnover (my manager would keep partners in the system after they chose to leave so that it strategically didn't affect the turnover as bad as it otherwise was)....

this basically happened at my store and did not get solved until the partner did something and i threatened to call the police and contacted the dm
