I'm close to quitting. I've applied to other jobs. I was placed in a high incident store as a manager with less than a year of experience as a manager. I need to hire 8 people, but no one wants to work at our store because it's frankly too stressful. I don't blame them. I get labor, I get tons of labor. My schedule calls for 9 people for my Friday peak. But I can't staff it. We have too many semi violent homeless people. We are getting a new district manager who has no idea what struggles my partners have. I want to create a strong partner community, but I can't if all my trainees leave after one shift. I'm one partner quitting away from just walking away with no job. I cry after every single shift now. I know I don't have it as bad as some stores, but I just can't do it anymore. I'm just ranting, but I don't know what else to do. And I'm afraid. I haven't worked anywhere except Starbucks for years. I worked so hard for this, and now I have to walk away.

This is the reason that even with 10000 years of experience at Starbucks and a 4 year degree I guffaw when the "development conversation" happens.
Like no, I'm not willing to run your shitty inner city store you stick every new manager in. No, I'm not interested in 5+ calls on my day off regarding new incident reports because some drunk dude whipped it out a pissed in the lobby.
All because some dumbass racist bitch in Philly abused the system. When we used to ask the disruptive homeless people to leave (4 or so years ago) we had NO problems. Guys would pay for a cup of coffee, drink it, and leave. No muss, no fuss. Now there are 5-10 people who purchase nothing charging phones in the lobby, all in various stages of needing to be woken up, overdosing in the bathroom, bathing (aggressively) in the bathroom (for real, how do you get that much water everywhere,) yelling at nothing, fighting with each other, getting drunk, etc. Like, I'm not a cop or a social worker. I'm not even intimidating or empathetic. Why should I be handling these issues?!?!?!
And you guys, like the rest of us, get shit pay.
Good luck in all your future endeavors. Ignore my defeatist attitude. It's been a rough 2 months with an open lobby, extreme understaffing, and pandemic insanity.

Why don’t you trespass the violent homeless people?
hikintexan [OP]2 points2y ago
We have. Sadly, most are not mentally stable and end up back on the streets and back in my store. Many times by the time the police show up at the store the people have already left and I'm given a shrug about what to do. I want to have sympathy with them, but they are also threatening and in certain cases punching my partners.

Have you had a sit down talk with the DM?
hikintexan [OP]3 points2y ago
My DM is actually leaving. The new DM is only interim and is in charge of 2 districts right now. My old DM downplayed the incident prevelance for sure to get me in the store.

Wishing you luck! Hopefully when I move to Texas in January I get lucky enough to be in a LESS WILD store then I already am in.

Depends on the area. If you're coming to Dallas, good luck. Everyone in my area is struggling.

Flowermound ... so yeahhhhh ughhh
hikintexan [OP]3 points2y ago
I've worked in Flower Mound. It's not terrible, just snobby customers.

This is why I stopped going through the training to be an sm. I've been with Starbucks for 8 years. I refuse to be used for the shitty pay. Sometimes you luck up, most times you don't. Think about stepping down instead and taking advantage of what they offer. I'm about to graduate with honors with my bachelor degree in history. I stepped all the way down to barista and I've never been happier. Good luck.

I wish I could. I can't take the pay cut to step down. I got bills to pay. I'm hoping to throw my lot in with another customer.
