Karen Moment Today (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by SadType8
Customer came in to the cafe not wearing a mask. Asked her kindly if she could put one on if she had one or we could give her one (she had her own in her bag). She was kind up until that moment. Proceeded to say no one was in the store except her, because apparently the other baristas and I don’t count as other people, and got mad that we would ask her to wear one. So she said she’d wait outside and we could bring her the food and drinks she got to her.

Good to know how some customers view us baristas.

7 months in and we still have this issue. Do you have sign on your entrance like we do that says “masks required”? No excuses are acceptable to me anymore I’m so tired of asking adult to read and act like adults.

We have it posted at the door, in DT, right next to the registers, and by the hand off area. We also have a handful of masks to hand out if someone comes in without one. There’s no excuse especially if they have their own and are just refusing to wear it.

Not defending the Karen at all because the customer is totally wrong. But from arguments I’ve gotten into online with anti-maskers, it seems that people don’t understand that if others are wearing masks those people are protected and if the anti masker isn’t worried about COVID, they don’t see the point in wearing a mask. So since baristas are all wearing masks and behind counters that customer is thinking this shouldn’t matter, however I think they are finding more and more that is not true. Sorry you had to deal with that OP!

True. Honestly I was more annoyed at how she started getting angry and rude about the whole thing after kindly asking her to wear one. Another barista also let her know she could go through drive thru instead since it’s not mandated she wear a mask for that. I still think it should be, but that’s a whole other issue. I know masks are uncomfortable, I hate having to wear one for my entire shift, but I don’t see the need to throw a tantrum if we’re asking you to wear one for the 2 minutes you’re inside.

She also kept leaning over the barrier while I was taking her order and was right up in my face, which made me extremely uncomfortable for my own heath.
