Before I start I’d just like to say - yes I know there are people at the bux for the health care and schooling(which btw is great in my opinion). But I just wanna say, for others out there - there’s so much better out there. I’ve done multiple retail jobs/food industry jobs/hard labor/warehouse jobs. I started at Starbucks earlier this year in February and catered to the stores needs in every which way possible until about a couple weeks ago. Because I quit, no two weeks no nothing. At least I thought it wasn’t deserved. I worked every single weekend for 8 months when there was people who had availabilities where they couldn’t work weekends for no reason. After the 8 months I put my availability in to where I could work 6 days a week and Sunday off so I could watch football and do homework. It was denied w/ my manager saying ‘I need you to work weekends you gotta give me something’ I literally replied ‘yea the other 6 days of the week. I do work another job as well where I was willing to come in after doing 8-4 and close at the bux. Denied, whatever I needed other days off for school. But really why do I gotta be there Sundays? Hire people, that’s your job. Oh you need me there specifically? Well ima need more money then, I didn’t say that tho. Few days later and I’m POS/running food over to drive thru. No one in line so I’m talking to the ovens guy. SM goes real loudly ‘________ I know I pay you a lot of money but you can’t stand there and talk, you gotta restock lids or something’. I laughed in her face. That was the last day I worked at that store. I sent the GM a very long message not throwing anyone under the bus and telling them all this pretty much (I also am if not the best one of the best workers in that store). The GM said ‘oh did you know you get an annual raise in January’ in which I replied ‘yea I don’t need .50 cents, gonna need a whole lot more than that’. She said she couldn’t make that happen so I told her it to not expect me at the store anymore. The SM had the audacity to offer .75 cents. I said if $13 wasn’t on the table then there’s nothing to talk about.Fast forward a few days and one of the baristas I worked with got me in to target for $15 an hour working the Starbucks doing the same shit. 50% increase. Don’t take shit you don’t have to. KNOW when you’re being treated unfairly. DON’T let any loser make you think that workplace is the center of the universe JUST because it is for their sorry ass. There is better out there, doesn’t have to be target. I literally told the GM after everything that I’ve take way less shit for way more money. And if you feel you take too much shit then there’s a chance your SM is ass.

TLDR - Worked my ass off at Starbucks while others stood in the corner with their finger up their bum. While making the same $. Asked for a raise didn’t get it. Got a job at target doing the same shit for $5 more an hour.

My manager used to pull some stunts and it would make me so annoyed.

I needed a Sunday (one) off, and I figured it would be fine, since I found coverage. Manager told me no and that she needed a bar person so this new person couldn't work. I found a second person to cover, again, no (yet this second partner had been there for almost a year and a half and definitely could bar, not the best, but they could). I showed up to work, and the SSV placed me on DT, and there were not one, two, or three people who could bar, **BUT 4.** I had something really important that I missed because of it, and that was when I realized that despite my manager playing nice to my face, I wasn't worth anything to that store.

Three months later, after the COVID time off pay, I took the severance package and left for good. Super happy now.

Also, the scary thing is that $0.75 is a decent raise for Starbucks. I believe the annual raise is something like 3%, so for me, when I was making $9/hour, I got a $0.27 raise per year. There are jobs that require a lot less or are simply just better to their staff that pay similarly or better. If you're making minimum wage/close to it and are really unhappy with how SBUX is treating you, I definitely suggest looking around for other opportunities.

At my store, shifts start at $11/hour, and because of the added stress, people in my store literally would turn down the promotion offer just because it isn't worth it. If the mental and physical toll wasn't as bad, then fine, it's a decent job, but a bad SM can make the job horrible.

Yea see that’s the type of stuff that managers think they can get away with and be slick... I personally don’t let it fly. Good to hear you got out and are happy now :)

Man im in the same shoes as you. Starbucks just doesn’t pay and the customers are awful. It’s totally fast food energy at my store. They give the shittiest raises and the only reason I stuck around was covid. I finally got a better job though where I will be making nearly double and will not be dealing with customers.

Congrats! It’s quite a great feeling. Fast food energy is certainly an understatement!
