Customer connections (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by quickwrath
Hi all
I’m really anxious/shy and find it hard, when I’m at the POS, to ask customers about how their day is going. This is partly due to my anxiety— talking to people is hard— but I also feel like the few conversational ideas I have (“how are you”/“how’s your day been”/“any plans for the day” etc) just don’t seem that interesting. I would like to ask customers questions that actually help me get to know them. I was wondering if anyone might have any suggestions?

Usually if they order a seasonal drink I ask them if its their first time trying it, if it’s become one of their favourites etc.

I also like to talk about the weather or back to school, work, commute to work or traffic

Oh that’s a good idea about the seasonal drinks! Back to school is a great suggestion since the store I work at it very close to a university. I hadn’t thought of that at all.

Talk about something you see in their car. If I see flowers or presents I’ll ask if there’s a special occasion or something. It takes time, but I really hope you start feeling more comfortable with talking to people since connecting is like 90% of the job

Thank you! I actually don’t work at a drive thru but I’m going to start paying more attention to what people have with them. I love when I can genuinely compliment somebody’s outfit/mask/etc. but that doesn’t usually lead to the kind of connection I want.
