it finally happened. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by stevebuckyy
one of our baristas tested positive lmao. she was on evening block so "morning block can still work!" even tho i've been scheduled one to two hours past morning block and have worked with her.

we weren't comfortable with that so all the shifts contacted our DM. the store is going to be closed for a week (better than nothing) and we'll get paid for what we're scheduled. evening block is still going to be isolating for the full two weeks though.

idk man. like i just accepted this as a possibility but didnt know what would ACTUALLY happen, you feel?

I was the initial partner to test positive back in june, they closed my store for 2 days to deep clean, only the 8 partners whom I worked with on the last day before I stopped working where told to isolate for 14 days. I actually was instructed to return to work after 10 days. Was told I didn't need to test negative. But I was still symptomatic and my daughter was still hospitalized. I have come to realize we work for a company that truly could care less about its employees.

That's awful. We were going to return the next fucking day even though the shifts have worked with her and I literally worked an entire hour with her less than 48 hours ago. They're a multi billion company, they can afford to close one store for two weeks. Goddamn. I really hope you're doing better now.

What do you mean they dont care? They thank me for my hard work all the time. A pat on my sweat filled back is worth more than a raise, right?!
Fozzybean 4 points 2y ago
What state are you in and is she showing symptoms?
stevebuckyy [OP] 3 points 2y ago
Oklahoma, and I'm not sure. She just started this week, actually. She started Monday and told our manager Sunday.

We're out 5 partners right now due to either them or their family testing. That's about a third of our staff and the best corp response was to just shorten the store hours a lil bit. 😂👍👍
stevebuckyy [OP] 4 points 2y ago
Oh man, 10/10 leadership, I love it lmao. Corporate really doesn't care about us lowly workers. But I bet if a corporate worker tested positive they'd be able to quarantine 14 days and get paid overtime for it.

I’m so sorry! If you dont mind my asking, is it a store in OKC? Sorry I’m just curious. I’m a former OKC partner and was curious about which store it was if it is an OKC one. But I understand if you don’t feel comfortable sharing that. Good luck and stay safe.
stevebuckyy [OP] 1 points 2y ago
hey, it's fine! we're all okay, non one else tested positive and we isolated. however no, it's a Tulsa store. I've been to a couple of OKC stores tho (not since then obviously) so I'm familiar with them hahah, it's interesting that the environment there is so different from Tulsa even tho we're in the same state.
ceafk99 1 points 2y ago
How do you mean it’s a different environment just curious lol
stevebuckyy [OP] 1 points 2y ago
I guess it's cause of the places in OKC I've been to but they were a lot more ritzy than our stores here? More modern is the word I guess. I went to one on May and it had THREE MACHINES!! I was like, in awe lol.
ceafk99 1 points 2y ago
Interesting you say that lol. I worked at a smaller store that wasn’t in like a central part of OKC, so the store definitely had an older feel to it! But yes I agree, the May one is probably one of the better stores in the area, if not the state. Maybe except for the Edmond ones. Those stores make me feel like I’m in California or something lol. When I go to other states (I’m looking at you Texas), I’m always astounded at how amazing their “regular” stores are. And by “regular” I mean ones that aren’t in a popular part of the city or something. Like I’ve been to Starbucks stores in random Dallas suburbs that are comparable to some of the “best” ones we have in the OKC area.

That really sucks. The big thing I don’t understand is how you find it funny. At all.
philosopher_cat_lady 23 points 2y ago
He's not making light of it, he's highlighting the absurdity of the situation. The definition of comedy is absurdity + reality. His post is describing the weird feeling of reality seeping in to the fantastical environment Starbucks has and believes of its employees/customers being safe from COVID when they are anything but.
sparkytheboomman 3 points 2y ago
Damn this is kinda deep? I thought it more like a dry humorless laugh at being in a bad situation. I was on board with that. Now you got me having existential feels
stevebuckyy [OP] 2 points 2y ago
It was kind of more a dry humorless laugh but honestly, u/philosopher_cat_lady described my actual feeling perfectly. Obviously this isn't a funny situation, I'm just really in disbelief and it's hard to muster up enthusiasm for this anymore tbh.
philosopher_cat_lady 1 points 2y ago
Yeah, the other day I was telling a regular that it had been hellish in our café lately because the busiest Starbucks in our city was closed at the time for a quarantine and we were an adjacent one getting all of their customers. My shift supervisor was like, "Don't do that, it ruins the customer's experience." I thought to myself, 'Ok, so not only do I have to risk my life by going to work but I have to pretend it's a positive experience, even with the customers who know us really well.'
stevebuckyy [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Yes, thank you for describing what I feel perfectly. Obviously this isn't a funny situation. What is funny is how they got so mad at it lmao.
stevebuckyy [OP] 22 points 2y ago
I don't? I used 'lmao' as disappointed but not surprised. It's sarcasm dude. Why would I find this situation funny.
Pies-in-the-Skies -53 points 2y ago
I’ve never seen anyone use “laughing my *** off” in a sarcastic way in text. Doesn’t come across right. Sorry to hear about your situation, and I’ll be praying for your partner and the entire crew.
dodofishman 11 points 2y ago
Damn dude, time to get online. The youth have been saying "lmao" ironically for quite a while.
Pies-in-the-Skies -14 points 2y ago
I’ve probably been “online” longer than you’ve been alive. I agreed that the situation is bad and it sucks, I just pointed out that it’s honestly a little difficult to read sarcasm through text and that it doesn’t seem appropriate to use lmao, ironically or not. The way it was used made it appear that the OP was amused by the partner being diagnosed. Take it however you want.
