How much to SSV make? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by stepfatherels
I work on Texas and I know it differs in every state, I want to save quite a lot of money in the next three years and I don’t know if becoming a shift is worth it in the pay difference.

I make a dollar more than baristas, and starbucks is my second job. I have to work every day of the week to make enough to pay rent and save for moving. It's up to you and what you can do. If the difference is enough and you can get solid enough hours go for it. If the hours are lacking enough and people are hiring, get a second job.

Also you can and should be talking frankly and openly about what everyone is making at your place of employment. This avoids discrimination, catches clerical errors (like my friend who was promoted in name and not salary for a year and is owed 1k+ in wages), and in general is just a better business practice. Talk to your SM.

I make about $2.25 more than a barista. It pays the bills. I don’t do much saving though.

In Florida, at least at my store, SSV's started at $11, baristas started at $9. Personally, I don't think it is worth the stress. I was actually considered for an SSV position, but I made it abundantly clear that I didn't want the extra work. Also, SSVs seem to be the ones who take all of the slack from the manager, whether or not it is warranted. Most of the SSVs at my store were miserable and depressed, and dreaded going into work. Also, calling out/taking a vacation can be quite difficult as an SSV according to some people I know. Since most stores only have the required amount of SSVs needed, and not extras on "stand by," the SSVs are often getting full time hours, so when they want a week off for a holiday along with 2 of the other 4 SSVs, it's nearly impossible to get the request approved since there isn't anyone to work the shift.

I know this isn't the case for every store though, but personally I would advise against it unless if you need the cash. I think that generally just working for the base pay is easier and better. An extra $2/hour would be about $4000 a year, x3 years is $12,000 (assuming 40hrs/week). I don't know your financial situation, but considering the extra stress of working as a SSV, have you though about maybe doing 6hrs at SBUX and then 4hrs at another job making $9/hr? It would work out to about the same extra $12,000, but if you're willing to take on the stress of becoming an SSV, getting a second job as part time/limited part time might just be easier in the grand scheme of things even though it would equate to more hours. Just a thought though, either way, best of luck!!

Also, with the holidays coming up, I would suggest maybe considering getting a part-time holiday job. At least where I live, part-time holiday retail/factory/shipping jobs pay about $2-3 more per hour than Starbucks/minimum wage. It would be seasonal, so you might only get like 8-10 weeks of work part time (20hrs/week), but 160-200hrs x $2-3 = $320 - $600 more than you would've made during that same time at Starbucks.
